Halloween, 1992. Over 30,000 UK viewers glued to their TV set fixated in a trance like state of terror. For on this unforgettable night, the world was introduced to one of the scariest ghost shows of all time, Ghostwatch. Whilst technically not a film, our countdown of the best ghostly movies to the DVD and Blu-ray release of The Pact simply couldn’t emit this momentous TV show.
Michael Parkinson, Sarah Greene and Craig Charles stared in this mockumentary that explored the terrifying goings on of a family and a spooky presence nicknamed Pipes. The hour long show quickly erupted into the realms of madness culminating with a ‘live’ onscreen death, and complete chaos as the poltergeist’s power boomed. Despite the fact the show included the writing and cast credits, many viewers (most likely late tunner-ins) thought what they were seeing was anything but fiction. The show sparked huge controversy as viewers were petrified to their souls seeing, what they thought, was a genuine manevelant poltergeist reeking havoc.
Very similar to the Orson Welles’ War Of The Worlds radio show, Ghostwatch was a clever and frightening satire on 90′s television and television audiences. This show helped to pave the way for other hugely popular ghost films that blurred the lines between fiction and reality, including Paranormal Activity.
For a more recent and equally terrifying poltergeist thriller, be sure to check out The Pact - available from Monday!
Break-out horror movie smash of the year that has been electrifying hardened genre fans and non-horror fans alike, “The Pact” combines the supernatural terrors of “Paranormal Activity” with the tense atmospherics of a serial killer thriller to create a unique, modern-day take on the classic ghost story.
