This Week @ Cult Labs: 17 June 2010

Anyone know any good hangover cures? Met up with some friends last night and more wine than is advisable was consumed. I’ve heard a bottle of Viper is good for shaking out the cobwebs so if someone could get me one then I’d appreciate it. That, and some ice cream. Thank you.

On the bright side, I did get my phone and can, as I mentioned last week, set it up to access Twitter. For those of you with smartphones, why not look up a Twitter app? That way you can follow @cultlabs and be kept abreast of the latest news at all times! I’ve spent the last few days setting it up to be an appropriate technological tool for a geek such as myself. Needless to say the Doctor Who theme is now my ringtone and there are Dalek pictures on every available surface!

New phone also has apps for task management and it’s currently telling me that, in about an hour, I need to crawl into bed with a pint of water and try to stop my tongue feeling like the underside of Ratman’s foot. So without further ado, here’s your newsletter!

THERE’S SOMETHING GOING ON AT THE LABORATORY

Oh my, I actually feel like I might have died at some point. Possibly need a cup of tea. Yes, that’s it, life-giving tea. While I go and make myself a cup, let me fill you in on what’s been happening over on the Cult Labs forums this week.

Tell us what you want!

Stefan has been good enough to post a thread asking what you want from your Cult Labs. “If all goes to plan we should be able to get a lot more development done this year,” he writes. “So, what would you want to see developed here at the Labs? A YouTube-like section rammed full of clips to watch? A better gallery for members’ artwork? New improved blogs? A way to record and show off your collection?” Many of you have already got in touch, letting us know what you’d like to see. bizarre_eye would like to see an online store selling DVDs and Blu-rays, as well as other merchandise like mugs, key-rings, posters and T-shirts. darthelvis, meanwhile, suggests a Cult Labs podcast. So how would you like to see the site and community develop? Head on over to this thread and post your suggestions while you can!

Arrow Video – Tenebrae

As forum regulars will know by now, Arrow are releasing Dario Argento’s wonderful Tenebrae on DVD (Blu-ray is as yet undecided) and the artwork panels have started popping up on the official thread. So far I have been pretty much reduced to tears by each one. Tenebrae is one of my favourite films and the artwork Arrow have selected is just too gorgeous for words, particularly Rick’s artwork which is just stunning. The artwork has provoked positive reactions so far so why not pop over to the thread to let us all know what you think?

For members who were around during the video nasty scare…

Although this thread was started quite a while ago by Neil I thought it was pertinent to revisit it in light of last weeks Cult Labs victory over the BBFC (if you missed last week’s newsletter you can read it here). We’ve come a long way since the 1980s which becomes even more apparent when reading some of the stories from dis and wayfarer. Many Cult Labs members, including myself, are too young to remember the video nasties era and so it’s important for us to read first-hand accounts of how it affected film-lovers. So, if you have a story about how the video nasties list affected you why not take a few minutes to write it down on this thread?

Grand Guignol

iluvdvds set up this thread a few weeks back and has this to say, “From the 1890s to the 1960s, the Grand Guignol (pronounced Gran Geen-yol) AKA ‘The Theatre Of Horror’ would put on shows which featured lots of gore, murder, death, torture and exectutions. These things would (especially in the later shows) would be the main focus, often shoving plot out of the limelight! See what I did there. (I’ll get my coat). From what I’ve read the theatre was also very much like how I imagine Grindhouse cinemas to be – full of dodgy people and stained seats. So, here’s a thread to discuss all things Grand Guignol.” So what are you waiting for? Do you have any cool factoids to share? Or perhaps some artwork? Whatever it is, head on over to this thread and do some sharing!

THE BEST OF THE REST

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“There’s no shame in shedding a little tear for it.I did myself.” – stevoj gets as emotional as me over Tenebrae.
