THIS WEEK @ CULT LABS: 15 APRIL 2011

TIME FOR SOME SPEED TYPING!

Due to a technical hitch, I’m writing this newsletter much later than planned! By the time you read this, I’ll be at a conference, networking and getting all nervous about delivering my paper on Saturday. But right now I have to write this newsletter, finish cutting words out of said paper and decide what the heck I’m going to wear – all before bedtime!

But before I do that, I’d like to say a huge thank you to Kyle for covering for me for the last two weeks while I’ve been away. You’ve done a great job, Kyle! Now relax and put your feet up, perhaps while watching Monsters (Vertigo Films: DVD & Blu-ray), which is out now and is also awesome! Check out the blog and official thread!

ALSO OUT NOW

The best killer tyre film you’ll ever see is out now on DVD and Blu-ray from Optimum! Rubber is a classic tale of a psychic tyre called Robert who falls in love with a girl and kills anyone who gets in his way. Described as Roger Corman meets David Lynch, a mix of surrealism and exploitation, Rubber is one of the most original films you’ll see all year. For more info, have a peek on the blog, or chat on the official thread.

OUT NEXT WEEK

It’s been an anticipated title for a while now but Norwegian Ninja (eOne: DVD) is finally out on Monday! This hilarious film from the producers of Dead Snow is causing a stir on t’interweb, with Mass Movement describing it as “a sure fire contender for film of the decade!” To find out more, check out the official hubsite!

Also out next week:

  • Prisoner Cell Block H: Vol. 7 (Shock Entertainment & Fremantle Media: DVD) – have a peep at the blog or check out the official forum!
  • Fantastic Factory Presents… (Arrow Video: DVD) – have a read of the latest blog or join the official mini-forum.
  • Blood Simple (Momentum Pictures: DVD) – check out the blog or natter on the official thread.

COMING SOON FROM CULT LABS

Coming to cinemas 6 May 2011 is 13 Assassins (Artificial Eye), a film destined to remind us of why we love Takashi Miike. Nominated for the prestigious Golden Lion award at the 2010 Venice International Film Festival, 13 Assassins has also been nominated for 10 Japanese Academy Awards including those for Picture of the Year, Director of the Year, Screenplay of the Year and Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role (Koji Yakusho). Set in mid-19th century Japan, a fragile calm is soon threatened by the bloody rise of Lord Naritsugu, the Shogun’s sadistic, psychopathic younger brother. A noble samurai gathers together an elite group of samurai to assist him in the task of bringing down Naritsugu, knowing that what they are about to embark upon may well prove to be a suicide mission. Miike’s most accessible film to date, 13 Assassins will be a treat for fans and newcomers alike.

THERE’S SOMETHING GOING ON AT THE LABORATORY

Phew! I’ve never typed this fast before! Going to stop for a nice big mug of tea (before speedily continuing) so while I sip, why don’t I fill you in on what’s caught my eye this week?

SHAM031/SHAM201 – Cannibal Holocaust: The BBFC Advice

Although I’m pretty sure this is all over the internet by now, I’d better report on it just in case you’ve been living in a cave! To the surprise and joy of many, a BBFC advisory board has, well, advised Shameless that Cannibal Holocaust would only have to be cut by 14 seconds after viewing a fully uncut version of the film. This minor cut to just one scene of animal cruelty is a milestone event for the UK, with the film having previously received minutes worth of cuts in earlier years. It’s a landmark, so join in the chat!

Would you buy limited edition collector’s packaging for Cannibal Holocaust?

In other Cannibal Holocaust news, Shameless are seriously considering the option of releasing a limited edition version of with collector’s packaging. They haven’t decided on what this packaging would be yet and before they choose, they want to gauge the opinion of Cult Labs members as to whether this would be a worthwhile effort. You can vote in this in our poll, which is open until 21 April 2011, so head on over!

SHAM032 – Almost Human: The Artwork

It’s been a busy week at Shameless Towers. Not only do we have lots of news on everyone’s favourite cannibal movie, the artwork has been revealed for Almost Human… and it’s lenticular! You can check out the artwork on this thread and let us know what you think, so pop over there now!

Your Favourite Horror Film from…

bizarre_eye has kindly set up a bunch of threads in the Horror Lucky Dip section giving a year-by-year discuss of horror. At the moment, the 1970s and 80s are up, but it’d take too long for me to list them all so your best bet is to follow the link above and choose the year you wish to natter about. It’s a great idea but if anyone picks 1984 and says they’re favourite horror is Sarah, I will cry.

If you’re heading over to the forums, be sure to check out the forum rules and pop into the new members thread to say hello if you haven’t already. If you ever feel intimidated by the behaviour of any Cult Labs members, tell one of the mods in strictest confidence: that’s me, Reaps, Stephen, Nos and bizarre_eye.

KYLE’S COMP CORNER

This week, Kyle has got a copy of Monsters to give away in his super cute competition. Yep, that’s right, I said “cute.” To find out why you’ll have to check out the Comp Corner. Might as well enter while you’re there! Good luck…
