THIS WEEK @ CULT LABS: 16 SEPTEMBER 2011

ONLY 100 DAYS LEFT!

Ho No No!

Let the panic begin! From tomorrow the countdown to Christmas is heading into double figures. Holy smokes! It’s time to start present buying, turkey searching, in-law inviting and hair pulling. Unless you’re like me and leave all that festive malarkee to the day before. If that’s the case, just sit back and watch the world quickly fall apart in the shadow of the unstoppable fat bearded man. Of course it’s not all bad. There’s the annual Cult Labs Secret Santa to look forward to and it means that Halloween is fast approaching to.

By the looks of this newsletter, Chistmas has come early! Just take a look at all the fantastic DVDs and Blu-Rays that are on their way to the UK. Pretty awesome stuff, I’m sure you’ll agree.

ALL THE BEST THINGS OUT NOW!

A great ghost story for those winter blues.

One word: Insidious. According to Dictionary.com the word is an adjective meaning something ‘stealthily treacherous or deceitful.’ But, according to the millions of people who have seen the film around the globe, this adjective connotes a different meaning. Namely, ‘Oh dear God, I think I just peed myself. Make it stop! Mummy!’ Or something along those lines. Frequently described as one of the most terrifying films of the year, Insidious tells the tale of a family being haunted by something. Only it’s not their house that the ghoulies are after. It’s their son! This film, from the director of Saw and Dead Silence, James Wan is a great throwback to older horrors, most notably Poultergeist and The Amityville Horror. So if you’re looking for a slice of ghastly and ghostly fun, then this film is just what you need. Insidious is out on both DVD and Blu-Ray now thanks to Momentum Pictures. Cult Labs have been going crazy for this haunted horror flick. From countless blog posts to an official thread. Be sure to visit them all to really get those willies crawling up your spine.

COMING SOON TO A SHOP NEAR YOU…

Grab a pen guys and get ready to add some titles to your ‘Screw Christmas! I can’t wait that long for these beauties’ list. Plenty of brilliant TV and films here that any cult fan would love to own.

  • Heil Hopper!

The Twilight Zone: Vol. 4 Box Set (Shock Entertainment & FremantleMedia Enterprises: DVD & BD) – 19 September. Yippee! Along with Doctor Who, The X-Files, and Star Trek no other sci-fi TV show can compare with the sheer brilliance of The Twilight Zone. Crammed with twists, fascinating stories and ideas and countless familiar faces, this is TV at its best. And in just a few days time you too can own it on DVD and/or Blu-Ray! Volume 4 was the first time the show started to create hour long episodes (rather than the previous 25 minute running time) and they are great fun, with many classic episodes including ‘Death Ship‘ and ‘He’s Alive‘ (staring the late great Dennis Hopper). This is a must have for any cult fan or sci-fi fan! Head on over to the forum to see more details on the release, vote for your favourite episodes and discuss each episode. Or why not visit the Cult Labs blog to see ‘7 Things That Make The Twilight Zone So Awesome!‘.

  • The Man With The Severed Head (Arrowdrome, DVD) – 19 September. What a title! If you fancy seeing some good ol’ Spanish exploitation then you cant go wrong with this little Naschy gem. One of the first releases by the new Arrow label, Arrowdrome, this DVD comes complete with a booklet by Calum Waddell, additional erotic scenes if you fancy your films a little bit more pervy, a brilliant featurette on the star and a reversible cover which looks like this. There was a little mix-up with HMV this week with this title, but it should be out by next week.
    • McBain (Arrowdrome, DVD) – 19 September. Christopher Walken. Whattaguy. Truely, the man’s a living legend. Probably most well known for his role in The Deer Hunter, The Walken takes center stage in this early action extravagansa. Bubbling to the brim with bullets, bodies and blood – this is one fiesty action film. So crunch your knuckles, click your necks and cock that gun as you enjoy McBain.
    • Cannibal Holocaust (Shameless Screen Entertainment – DVD/Blu-Ray) – 26 September. Ask any veteran Labber a few years ago whether they think Shameless would ever release a practically uncut version of Cannibal Holocaust and they’d probably laugh in your face and pat you on your naive head. Well, how wrong we were because surprise, surprise, that’s just what is happening! The most notoriously disturbing film in the history of the galaxy is coming to the UK in a yellow cover. Oh yah! Complete with extras and a brand new Ruggero edit just for the new release. Hows about that?! Click on the link for all the info.
    • Counter your guilt watching Cannibal Holocaust with this childhood classic.

Danger Mouse (Freemantle Enterprises: Dvd/Blu-Ray) – 26 September. Also out this month is the childhood favourite, Danger Mouse! Squeak squeak. The little fellow with a huge cult status is scuttling its way to the UK with this new ultimate box set coming out towards the end of September. Containing every single episode in a very nice box – similar to Count Duckula‘s release – this is simple the definitive edition of this nostalgic goldmine. Head here for the Funhub, the blog or the official thread.

THERE’S SOMETHING GOING ON AT THE LABORATORY…

Well, whats been going on in the forums eh? Quite a lot actually! First off the reversible artwork for the Arrowdrome releases have been revealed. From McBain, The Cheerleaders and Tokyo Decadeance to A Bay Of Blood, Deep Red and so many more titles. Head to the Arrowdrome section on the forum for more info and a chance to voice your opinions! Also on the forum this week…

    • Philleh‘s made a film – and here’s the trailer. Quite simply, the trailer looks awesome! Brilliant stuff! Made  ‘with no money and even less experience,’ this short film, titled 441 is all about passion and love for films. Check it out now by heading to his blog post! I really can’t wait to see what the film will be like!

Who the hell is this meant to be?! Find out by clicking her face.

    • The Cult Labbers Guide To The World! After visiting the (not so) Great Yarmouth this week I came across an old abandoned House Of Wax. How cool! But it gets better – this particular House of Wax is said to be the worst House of Wax in the UK and quite possibly the world! It got me thinking, if ever there was a place that deserved the ‘so-good-its-bad’ label we put on films, its this seaside resort. So this thread is dedicated to place you’ve been – anywhere a Cult Labber may find interest in. From places with morbid histories, gruesome secrets, unexplainable visitors or a place thats just so odd and strange it has to be visited to believe. Let us know where you’ve been here!

WIN! WIN! WIN! BECAUSE WE’RE GENEROUS LIKE THAT.

Inspired by the thread above, this week’s competition requires your artistic side to shine through. It’s too late to enter now, but visit the competition anyways to see the brilliant artwork and who is in for a chance of winning The Man With The Severed Head
