If You Go Down To The Woods Today…

Fear the Forest! The Forest Whitaker that is.

You better go in disguise. If you go down to the woods today, you’re in for a big suprise. If you go…long story short, you’re going to end up dead. The woods are a scary place; full of shadows, mysterious noises and birdwatchers. Growing up, I was convinced a bigfoot was living in my local wooded area ready to eat my face off, tear my blooded body limb from limb and serve me up in a deliciously warming stir fry to a pack of hungry baby Sasquatches. Of course, I now know that’s utter nonsense. Only a Yeti would eat such an oriental delicacy. But, I’m sure we all have our own stores of fearing the woods. It’s no surprise then, that horror films love these wooded realms into the most unkept and untrodden parts of our nightmares. From raping trees, werewolves, serial killers and countless other classic creatures. Well, it’s time to confront your fears in the newly released A Night In The Woods. Described as a British version of The Blair Witch Project this handheld horror takes place on one of England’s moors – the home of a terrifying paranormal beast. Check it out if you’re looking for some homegrown hell. Just avoid any trees after watching it.

Anywho, let’s step away from the woods (“You’re out of the woods, you’re out of the dark, you’re out of the night”) and crack on with this week’s newsletter…

COMING SOON…

  • Beneath The Darkness – From evil woods to psychotic killers and being buried alive. What a jolly newsletter this is! Out on Monday is this superb thriller that comes very highly recomended. If you’re after a film with a great plot that doesn’t rely on gore to terrify, a great cast and Dennis Quaid as a murderous nutjob who keeps his dead wife in the house – yep, you read that correctly – then this is the perfect film for you! Quaid oozes that good guy charm that the very best fruitcakes possess. From Norman Bates to Patrick Bateman and possibly Elijah Wood’s Frank (Maniac), the seemlingly most harmless ones are always the most harmful! Check out the official Tumblr and Forum for loads more info on this brilliant title.

  • The Pact – Now we’re really talking! Make way for one of the greatest thrillers of the year. The Pact smashed the box office upon it’s cinema release and is now set to scare and thrill you all over again on its DVD and Blu-ray release this October (the 1st). This is one brilliant film and we’re celebrating it’s release like made. Every day until the film’s week of release, we’ll be counting down the days, with a look at the ghostly genre right from the birth of film to the present day! So far we’ve looked at the very first horror film (EVER!) which happened to be a ghost flick, the silent classic The Phantom Carriage, The Uninvited, William Castle’s classic House On Haunted Hill and 13 Ghosts as well as The Innocents. You can read them all over on the blog (be sure to visit daily for more!). There’s loads more coming too, from an interactive Haunted UK map, plenty of incredible competitions and so, so much more. If you liked The Others, Sixth Sense, Insidious or What Lies Beneath, this one comes highly recommened. Go check out the official forum for more news and the Tumblr for pretty pictures.
  • SinisterPrepared to be terrified this October! Out on the 5th of next month is this years scariest film, Sinister. Staring Ethan Hawke as a writer who moves into a house with a grizzly history, this film is guarenteed to have you squirming, screaming and shrieking in the ailes. This week, we put several brave (read:stupid?) volunteers to the ultimate test by hooking them up to some very elaberotate equipment as they watched Sinister on the big screen. The equipment told us exactly how they were feeling and the results were as predicted- they were TERRIFIED! Take a look here for some more info. Don’t forget, to check out the brilliant Tumblr off the Hawke’s lead character. Get into the warped mind of the film’s staring character, leading up to the big house move. Dare you watch?

  • Arrow - In Arrow news this week, three new and exciting Arrowdrome titles have been release. It’s a triple bill of action with the newly announced Code Name: Wild Geese, Commando Leopard and The Commander. All three DVDs are in that eye-catching orange Action Arrowdrome uniform, and there’s no doubt that they’ll look incredible in any collection. Take a look at the details over on the thread.
  • Shameless Screen Entertainment – Meanwhile, in the yellowy corner of Cult Labs, the new front artwork has just been revealed for the upcoming release of Dutch killer thriller, Amsterdamned. For those who have yet to see it, the film tells off a killer on the loose; with plenty of action, some great gore and an unforgettable murderer this film is a must have for any Cult Collection. Let us know what you make of this cover over on the new thread!
