THIS WEEK @ CULT LABS: 24 AUG 2012

FrightFest Weekend!

This weekend is one of the most anticipated weekends of the year for UK horror fans. Over this bank holiday, Leicester Square will be overrun by an assortment of zombies, psychopaths, werewolves, vampires and a countless number of Dawn Of The Dead t-shirt wearing guys and gals. To celebrate the 13th year of FrightFest-ness, this year’s line up looks set to be the best yet. With treats from the vaults of Hammer Horror to Sinister, The Victim, V/H/S, We Are The Night and [REC] Genesis (which you’ll hear more off on Cult Labs over the upcoming weeks!) and even guest star, Dario Argento. We’ve set up a new mini-forum on Cult Labs dedicated to FrightFest, so come on over and share your thoughts on the films and the event!

OUT NOW!

  • Shameless’ Pop Erotica Fest - Out now is the beautiful new box set from Shameless Screen Entertainment. Featuring three sexy but incredibly stylish Italian movies, Venus In Furs, Baba Yaga and my personal favourite, The Frightened Women this is a definite must for all cult fans who like their movies a little on the sleazy side. With an eye-catching front cover and a very cool reverse artwork that nods to the early days of home video entertainment (take a look at this blog, all about the forgotten V2000 format!), how could you possibly resist its dirty charm? If you haven’t already, order yours today and let us know what you think over on the releases’ Official forum!
  • Monster Brawl - Ding! Ding! Ding! Let the ultimate battle begin! For any fans of Wrestling or horror films, this film is made for you. See horror cinema’s greatest baddies paired up in the ring against one another. To celebrate the film’s DVD release, MyMovies held a very special screening of the film in London that proved to have been a huge success. Take a look at the video here with none other than Mr. Kim Newman.

COMING SOON…

  • Truth Or Dare – What’s the worst thing that could happen in a game of Truth Or Dare? Revealing an embarrasing story? Drunkenly kissing some random person? Or how about being tied up and forced to take part in horrifying tests by a lunatic hell bent on uncovering a deep, dark truth? Yep, I think the last options wins. In comes, Truth Or Dare, a new British horror film starring David Oakes from The Borgias. It’s a great film that’s perfect for a night of modern horror entertainment. Take a look at this great sneak preview…

Admired the puppies? Good! Now onto the newsletter, kicking of with some flesh-eating, brain chewing, limb-feasting zombies…

COMING SOON…

  • [REC] Genesis – Blood, guts, gore and…romance?! If you thought Shaun Of The Dead was the ultimate zom-rom-come, you’ve got another thing coming. The third installment in the incredibly popular [REC] series heads in a new and exciting direction that’s similar to Evil Dead II and Braindead with a large dosage of romance and heart-thumping terror. Set during a wedding, we’ve been going crazy celebrating its upcoming DVD and Blu-ray release (3rd September), with real-life zombie wedding cakes (take a look – they’re brilliant!) and exclusive clips. Whatever you do, don’t miss out on these top tips on how to survival a zombie outbreak whilst at a wedding. With kick-ass weapons made from rice, champagne and…uh…Michael Buble (?!), these snippets of advice could save your live one day.
  • Truth Or Dare – Out on the 27th of this month is a great modern horror film that is well worth checking out. Taking the game of Truth Or Dare beyond snogging your secret crush into realms of extreme terror and violence, this film will keep you gripped to your seat right from the start. Staring David Oakes and somewhat like a Skins horror film, visit the official Facebook page for a whole bunch of great clips, stills and see the director of the film perform some dares of his own!
  • Pop Erotica Fest Box Set – Leather, chains, whips and women. Get ready for the release of the sleaziest, the kinkiest, and the down-right dirtiest sexploitation box set the UK has ever seen. Containing three films that kicks 50 Shades Of Grey in the knackers are the sexy yet highly stylish slices of Italian exploitation cinema, Baba Yaga, Venus In Furs and The Frightened Women. Take a look at some of the sexy GIFs from the set over on the forum. To celebrate the look of the box set (a gloriously gorgeous throwback to home entertainment in the 80s), we’ve created a blog and a thread all about that now forgotten format, the V2000. Anyone remember those?

  • Monster BrawlWe’ve all done it; asked ourselves who would win a fight out of two well known horror characters. What about three? Four? More?! Well, Monster Brawl takes this to the max and delivers one heck of a fun film that pits horror’s greatest creations head to head in a battle to the death…wrestling style! A must see for Smackdown and horror fans, the film also stars the cult icon, Art Hindle, best known for Black Christmas, Porky’s, Invasion Of The Body Snatchers and The Brood. Sam’s created a brilliant blog in celebration of this man and the movie that is well worth a look at!
  • A Night In The Woods – Remember the first time you saw The Blair Witch Project? Do you remember screaming like a little child and finding that, being so scared, you were in sudden need of the toilet but were just too damn scared to leave the safety of your sea? Maybe that was just me. But, here’s comes the British equivilant of The Blair Witch Project. It’s just as intense and equally heart attack enducing. Out on DVD on the 12th September, take a look at the film’s synopsis and specs over on the new official thread.
