The thing about genre movies is, no matter how much a critic of so-called ‘quality’ cinema may find the cliches unbearable, we in the horror community prefer to call them tropes thank you very much. A movie can be a checklist of the familiar as long as we know the director is as passionate about the genre as we are. So many big studio horror flicks seem to be directed by hacks-for-hire with no love or understanding of what the fans want from a flick, which is energy, verve, splatter, scares and an obvious affinity with making beheadings look totally sweet.

Hatchet 2 is a genre picture from the ground up. It’s set in a gloomy swamp, there’s voodoo and black magic, a stalwart cast of well loved horror performers (check out our links to previous posts on the stars of Hatchet 2 at the bottom of this post), an iconic and viciously wielded weapon, a diverse selection of characters with just enough personality to make them entertaining but not enough back story to make you too upset when their throats are suddenly torn out and most importantly, an overall atmosphere of gory enthusiasm for throwing the claret around.

Unlike the uninspiring creators of some  Hollywood diet-fright flicks, Hatchet 2 director Adam Green is clearly head over heels in love with horror, with a capital H… Written in blood… On the wall of a dank and haunted crypt. If you want evidence, check out his previous films like the first Hatchet movie or the queasily terrifying ski lift nightmare Frozen. For the ultimate proof of his gory credentials, look no further than his annual Halloween short film. Green has been making a humourous offering for the October witching season for the last couple of years and they prove that the filmmaker makes horror flicks for all the right reasons. Here’s an example… FAIRY TALE POLICE

LEARN MORE ABOUT HATCHET 2 (SPOILER WARNING!)

Hatchet 2 picks up at the exact moment that 2006’s Hatchet ends, wherein the quiet but hot-tempered Marybeth (Danielle Harris, Halloween I & II) is in a small boat in the Louisiana swamps, screaming for her life as she tries to free herself from the clutches of the deformed, swamp-dwelling killer Victor Crowley (Kane Hodder, Friday the 13th).

Crowley has murdered Marybeth’s family and other fellow vacationers who had come together on tourist excursion in the swamplands outside of New Orleans.

Marybeth escapes from Crowley and manages to make it back to civilization, where she once again encounters voodoo shop proprietor Reverend Zombie (Tony Todd, Candyman), who had helped to arrange Marybeth and company’s earlier, ill-fated tour of the area. To help Marybeth and also serve his own secret agenda, Reverend Zombie recruits a hardened pack of hunters to head back into the swamp to seek revenge on Victor Crowley.
