Spirals, mysteries, dark shadows, ghosts and creepy looking toys. Welcome to J-Horror land! Shock Labyrinth isn’t only the first J-Horror to be presented in 3D, it’s also effectively a massive tribute to everything we’ve found scary about the genre over the last ten years; An emphasis on atmosphere and giving the audience the spooks instead of spraying them with gore, Ordinary objects inbued with evil, dread and fear (In this case a cuddly rabbit, but you could subsitute that for a ring, wig or mobile phone), young raven haired women as conduits of terror, the list goes on…

Essentially, if, like me, you’re a big fan of moody Asian horror and you’d like to see a more garish version in glorious 3D, then seek out Shock Labyrinth, it’s coming soon to UK DVD

When I was choosing moments from the film to share on this blog, this scene stuck out for me as both incredibly spooky and a brilliant use of the 3D format. Shock Labyrinth throws every J-Horror trick it can at you to ratchet up the fear…

Shock Labyrinth 3D (cert. 15) will be released on DVD (£14.99) by Chelsea Films on 31st January 2011.

Shock Labyrinth director Takashi Shimizu is also behind the hugely successful Grudge movies, both in their original Japanese form and US remakes. Check out the playlist below, it’s packed with his work, including some really bizarre looking horror TV shows that I wish they’d import over here.
