Ironicaly, I think the first three Sontaran story's have some of the best cliffhangers in Who history.

Interesting to note is that during the Virgin New Adventure's, the Vardans became regulare foe's of the Doctor and where much more kick ass than there wimpy TV counter-parts.
Also of note, the Doctor has only ever met the SAME Vardan strike force, over and over due to the time loop he locked them in.
