Hooray?
Nope:
What a cock up! Once we had widescreen panned and scanned into 4:3, which was infuriating. Then letterboxed VHS and DVD came along and things looked good.
But now I see increasing releases cropped to fit 16:9 televisions! This is just panning & scanning all over again. Losing picture from top and bottom is no more acceptable than losing it from the sides.
I am furious about this. It's a step back and a disaster for film lovers.
EDIT: Now, in this particular case, because of John Carpenter & Donald Morgan's framing, it doesn't look too bad. I have seen many far more compromised 1.66:1 to 1.78:1 crops. But the fact remains that
Elvis was intended for 4:3 TV broadcast back in 1979, and every missing shoe and sliced off hairstyle and hat reminds you of this.
