Wow, is that the first time you've seen
The Devil's Backbone, Frankie? That's strange as I had exactly the opposite reaction to them. Don't get me wrong,
Pan's Labyrinth is an impressive film - I've seen it three times, including its premier - but it doesn't connect with me on the emotional level of
The Devil's Backbone. I don't even own a copy. I'm less interested in the fantastical if I'm honest, and far more interested in the spiritual -
Backbone, for me, had a far more melancholy atmosphere, and I loved the characters and the entire
mis en scene. Pan's rather more ambitious world, while impressively crafted, simply didn't resonate like I hoped it would.
