The original idea of metal from it's earliest days of the NWOBHM, through eighties thrash was always speed. Agreed, bands such as Trouble as one example began to change how metal was played, but when it comes to metal in it's most traditional sense (Maiden, Saxon, Priest, Dio, Accept) then speed was one of it's main thrill factors.
