The first time I saw I Walked with a Zombie, I was bored and found it unintentionally amusing but, a couple of years later, watched it again and was engrossed in the story, caught up in the atmosphere and struggled to figure out why I had such differing reactions to the film.
As Demdike said, watch it with the commentary, which is excellent. I'd then leave it at least a month or two so nothing is fresh in your mind and then give it another go.
