If I remember correctly, I thought the first series was very slow and demanded attention during the first 4-5 episodes. However, once it was past the halfway point, everything was tied together and I was just swept along.
Early on, there was a lot of character development and putting events and locations together and, once this happened, that's when I was really engaged (not that I wasn't interested during the first half of the season). It's possible that, because it's a new crime with new detectives, the second season will be the same.
It's similar to some detective films, such as Touch of Evil, Gone Baby Gone and Mystic River where the first act can be quite slow but the final act is utterly compelling.
