The Town That Dreaded Sundown.(original).
Fantastic docu-drama chronicling a series of unsolved murders in the rural south of America in the 1940s.
First off, the killer is one of the lost icons of horrordom, not only does he look great but his kills are pretty cool too. Even the absurdity of death by trombone looks menacing in this flick. In fact all the kills have a bloody aesthetic that greatly appeals to me.
The locations are suitably isolated and threatening in themselves and the film mixes a cinematic look with the flatness of TV films of the time to its advantage.
It would make a great double bill with the trashtastic 'The Zodiac Killer' from the same decade.
Recommended.
