Couldn't you level the same charge at David Lynch or David Cronenberg? Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive, Inland Empire, Dune, Lost Highway, Naked Lunch, Shivers, The Brood, Videodrome,, Scanners etc. are all 'weird' films.
