I think there is a general story arc throughout the second season regarding Mitch and his son, but each episode is generally a self-contained story. It isn't like The Sopranos, The Wire, Battlestar Galactica, or True Blood in that sense, and more like Star Trek or The Simpsons. There may be back stories for characters who have been in for several seasons if you were to jump in at season six, but I wouldn't think it is something where you can't catch up quite easily.
