Lungbarrow wasn't going to be an upcoming story; it was developed originally for season 26 but was vetoed by JNT and the original idea became Ghost Light (you can see traces of it with the cobwebby Gothic mansion idea and the character held in stasis).
I think there's a massive difference between being manipulative and being God-like, though. One is not same as the other, and I think the former was a good idea.
Although I'm not a fan of any of the novel ranges these days the Virgins were certainly superior to the BBC. The early 8th Doctor books were just bland, and the latter ones were way more impenetrable and up themselves that most of the Virgin books.
