Split Second (1992)

A fantastic sci-fi / horror/ buddy cop movie mash up starring Rutger Hauer as a maverick cop and Neil Duncan as his new partner, a serial killer specialist. The two are assigned to track down a killer whose mutilated victims are left with their hearts ripped out.

The setting - a futuristic London plagued by high flood waters and rats is a revelation and the direction captures the eerie ambiance of a rapidly deteriorating city populated by grotesque characters perfectly.

Hauer is on top form when he settles down from thinking he should be playing Martin Riggs in Lethal Weapon, as the cop who lives on strong coffee and chocolate and just barely tolerates everyone including his new partner. As it becomes apparent the killer probably isn't human the pace and thrills pick up considerably with some excellent action set pieces as the film thunders towards a gripping climax.

Split Second is one of those rare films that adds something to a well worn genre.

Thanks to Inspector Abberline for recommending this to me last year. Nice one!
