I've had an up-and-down week in terms of film choices, with absolutely one of the best horror films I've seen paired with possibly the most frustrating and unoriginal. So, not best and worst ever, but best and worst in a long, long time.
Best: The Witch (2015)
Lots of mentions of The Village on here. I'm of the "It was great until the twist" crowd. The Witch is the film I wanted from The Village. I love the setting and the style and the performances, even from the kids, are phenomenal across the board. Super, super creepy soundtrack, too.
Worst: The Innkeepers (2011)
Slow is OK. The Witch is a slow burn. But The Witch has things going on. The Innkeepers just has nothing happening at all. It was like Clerks without the jokes with the most cliched story imaginable. The Witch could be accused of using cliches in terms of the baddie, but there's so much going on besides the actual witch that the film could stand alone even if it was just a drama. I was a huge, huge fan of House of the Devil, even though the first 20 minutes of that film seemed to be shots of the lead walking about aimlessly, so I wanted to stick this out to the end. I thought Sara Paxton was great, too, doing a lot with a character without very much going on. But the ending just made things even worse, being almost hostile to the viewer. And not even in an interesting way. Furious haha. Won't be watching The Sacrament, but I'm not a fan of how that is a thinly disguised Jonestown movie anyway. There was just zero creativity in this movie and that looks to be of the same stable.
