It is a film which proves that occasionally it doesn't matter if the plot isn't entirely coherent with all events neatly wrapped up when the end credits roll. I remember reading that the writing team were so confused about how to explain who killed the chauffeur that they contacted Raymond Chandler, who told them he hadn't the faintest idea who did it!
