Possibly. 1968 had
Night of the Living Dead and
Rosemary's Baby but there really wasn't a US horror film of note until
The Exorcist in 1973.
One that will be on my list is Waris Hussein's underrated thriller
The Possession of Joel Delaney, starring Shirley McClane. At the time, she was the preferred choice of either the studio or William Friedkin (I forget which) for the role of Regan MacNeil but they didn't want her in two 'possession' films in two years, so she was taken off that shortlist and the rest is history.
