i think a lot of this is down to nostalgia rather than how the film originally looked on its UK premier or the intentions of the filmmakers. as i understand it, and correct me if I'm wrong, but the Hammer restoration was made with reference to an archive interpositive which i think is the closest surviving source to the original negative.
as an industry insider i wonder if
Michael Brooke has a view, or could shed some light on what has become a major talking point, at least among American fans.
