The Goldfinch (2019) ★★
I'd say this was a dull adaptation of a great book, a film which is superbly filmed by Roger Deakins and has exceptional costumes and production decoration, but that wouldn't be entirely true because I haven't read the book. After watching this, I'm in no rush to rectify that.
The film is tedious, it doesn't have any narrative urgency or soul, so just meanders along for what seems like double the 150 minute running time. When it finished, I was left unfulfilled; things happened to characters I didn't know or care about, the events were fairly uninspiring and lacking an emotional hook, making it very difficult to care about what happens.
It was a chore to watch, so I felt making it to the end credits was an achievement. The score is for the visuals which reminded me of Tom Ford's wonderful A Single Man, a vastly superior film which I wished I was watching instead of this, rather than for any enjoyment there is to be had.
