There weren't even any of the Emperors Royal Guards in the viewing platform room where the Emperor had his throne during that finale either. Had some of them rushed to protect the Emperor during that showdown then it could have been possible but they'd been dismissed long before.
But, yeah, McDiarmid was really good in all four films. There was a sneery then brooding menace about him in the prequel films. He's one of the main draws to those films for me.

The Last Jedi makes me want to watch it against my better judgment. Is he in it a lot?
