Decemberdike # 2 The Hole (2009)
Two brothers and their next door neighbour discover a hole on the cellar of the house they've just moved into. A hole boarded and padlocked by the previous owner.
Directed by Joe Dante this is firmly in the family friendly fantasy horror genre he pretty much made his own with the likes of Gremlins, Explorers, The Burbs and Matinee. A bright and breezy affair with not too scary examples of creepy clowns, demons and ghosts (very well done) and a trio of young actors - Chris Massoglia, Nathan Gamble and Haley Bennett - you can get behind and sympathise with plus Teri Polo and Bruce Dern as the main grown up leads, make this appealing viewing but it does fall slightly flat in it's third quarter until we get to the offbeat and surreal nightmarish finale.
All in all, this eighties style Stephen King-esq throwback was decent but you'd never choose it over Gremlins.
The Blu-ray image is superb and the fact it was shot for the 3D market never too intrusive.
