What's the best of Romero's original zombie trilogy?

Day without a doubt.

I like the doom atmosphere. All the characters really do look like they've quickly been thrown together. There is nobody there who actually seems to like anyone else (apart from Steele and Rickles). They all seem to put-up with each other, but nobody would be anywhere near any of the others if they didn't have to. I even got the impression that Sarah doesn't particularly like Miguel. He's just there. Convenient.

The opening scene just shows the bleakness and pointlessness of it all perfectly. It's all quiet and empty one minute, the next it's crowded and it all looks even worse than when it was empty.

And then, there's Savini's effects. Groundbreaking then, and I have to say unmatched even 25 years later. Seeing those guts fall out of the chest on that first of Logan's zombies was, and still is, incredible.

The pinnacle of Romero's and Savini's careers.


Found Dawn a little too "Light" and not grim enough, although I love it.

And this'll probably get me banned from here, but I prefer Savini's remake of Night to the original.

Although I love both Dawn and Night , I voted for Day of the Dead. It has a grim, apocalyptic feel to it, alongside some incredibly gruesome Savini FX, the tone is so dark and bleak.

Have such fond memories of first viewings of both NOTLD(on late night tv in the States when I was 15) and DAWN(after Ferman tried to have it banned, waiking thru the rain to see it at my local ABC) but my heart tells me DAY, it's just much more 'real' and downbeat. Tho I've seen DAWN many more times(and uncut it's much more fun)if my arm is twisted, the one I'd have on a desert island is NOTLD, just cause of the effect it had on horror in general and it's still genuinely creepy after all these years.

I love all three, but Dawn of the Dead is just a masterpiece.

Dawn! By far! One of the first horror films I ever saw and it might sound like a cliche but it did actually change my life.

I feel your pain. I was severely disappointed they put that version on a dead trilogy box set I bought, so I picked up another copy of the film, but it bloody had the new music. And then finally the other week I took a gamble (50p) on another copy, but thankfully this time it had the original music.

I've already said DAWN is easily my fav. But apart from the obvious powerful ending of Night, I friggin' love the scene where Ben recounts how he ended up at the farmhouse.

Considering the impact it had on me when I first saw it and the many, many viewings since, I went with Dawn.

It was a close call with Day though. I remember being impressed by the special effects the first time I saw it, but it just seemed too dark, too bleak for me the first time I saw it. It has grown on me over subsequent viewings though. I can't help but wonder how it would have turned out if George would have managed to secure to funding for his original script
