Fwiends, Womans and countwymen...Part 5

At about this time last year I started looking for old friends on FB. I found a few of them; Michael Claxton, Mick Lee and Lesley Paget were the main ones. I suppose I had best tell all and sundry where they "fit in!...

Having just moved from Shiregreen (S5 Sheffield postal area) to Wincobank (S9 Sheffield postal area)I decided to be "arsie" and go to Shiregreen Middle School (not TOO "arsie" though because

Xanadu. That song. Steve bloody Wrong kept playing it whilst I was working. So it got me thinking. A mate's brother always raved about it (and 'the horse song' in Legend ...) so I ignored that as he also poked fibreglass into his hand once then asked "is this dangerous?". He died in a car accident.
So I was in no hurry to see any movie called Xanadu.
Watching it was unique. I never liked musicals growing up owing to an early exposure to Seven Brides...

To do this I have been employing many methods; CBT (some use), Mindfullness (some use), Horticultural Therapy (in a big, peaceful garden, very useful), and a few courses (including 3-d printing and rustic stool making) with a lovely couple, Rachel and Steve, known as The Company of Makers https://www.companyofmakers.com/ (have a look at the stuff that Rachel produces out of old uniforms, she's...

Best Picture Oscar Winners

Posted 6th March 2018 at 09:28 AM by Nosferatu@Cult Labs
Updated 4th February 2021 at 11:00 PM by Nosferatu@Cult Labs

Following the ceremony on Sunday (February 4, 2018), I thought it would be a good idea to have a list of the 90 films which have won the Oscar for Best Picture, most recently Guillermo del Toro's sublime Cold War fantasy romance The Shape of Water. There was no category for Best Picture in 1928, with Wings taking the award for Outstanding Picture (the category which would become Best Picture in 1962 after other name variations) and Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans winning the Unique and Artistic Picture...

Film title

Posted 12th May 2017 at 04:39 AM by MrBarlow

I'm looking for film title can't really remember much about it I saw it when I was 9-10 years old and that was 20 odd years ago, what I do remember a man putting eyes into what seems to be a dummy and it comes to life and a small boy in a boat throwing away his glasses. I think it was set in a theatre.

Top 10 British Films

Posted 7th February 2017 at 08:08 PM by Nosferatu@Cult Labs

10 . if.... (1968)

Lindsay Anderson is one of the most underrated satirists in film history as his trilogy of films following Mick Travis (if...., O Lucky Man! and Britannia Hospital) all have an undercurrent of jet black humour and pointing out the foibles and utter stupidity of some major British institutions. In the case of if...., Anderson targets the public school system and, with Malcolm McDowell making his film debut, before he shot to fame in A Clockwork Orange, had an actor...

Lest we not forget that Isrealis wouldn't really care about "international incidents" hem, hem.
As hamfisted (funny that ;)) as Cannon seem to be, you certainly can't say that they don't pull out all the stops.
But I digress. The real "journey" here is Steve James, as in the space of 3 films he becomes adept at the old kung fu from a standing start.

Pink Flamingos: What Was Waters' Intent With This Film?

Posted 9th October 2015 at 09:18 AM by Breez.e.blocks

The film Pink Flamingos is a 1972 cult film by John Waters.
I am studying the film for my A2 film studies course and I wanted to get people's ideas on it.

My hypothesis is:
Controversy For Controversies' Sake:
Are John Waters' films there to simply shock or do they have more to say?

What do people think? Focusing on Pink Flamingos, who thinks that Waters wants to simply shock, or who thinks he has more to say?

In my desire to combat the onslaught of old age and senility (you at the back stop tittering) I have recently bought myself a bicycle. In my youth I did cut a fine figure, charging around peak and dale, with my handle bar moustache blowing in the wind as I chased the fair maidens on my penny farthing.
Well according to that young whipper snapper Bob Dylan times are a changing, and not for the better I may add, gone are the horse drawn carriage and in is the Fat Tyre,so as the long summer months...

Essential horror viewing

Updated 19th April 2015 at 08:24 PM by Nosferatu@Cult Labs

When it comes to classic genre films which are 'essential viewing', there isn't a definitive list, but, in 1999, Empire released a Special Collector's Edition supplement called The Greatest Horror Films Ever, which is a really good 'beginners guide' to horror. In it, there are 50 films in different categories of films, which I'll list here.

Creature Features
Frankenstein
Nosferatu
Dracula (1931)
The Mummy
The Bride of Frankenstein
Cat People...

The Ubiquitous Ms Ferland

Posted 15th April 2015 at 12:53 PM by Demoncrat

Jodelle Ferland. Don't know the name? You will by the end of this screed I hope. It started innocently enough when a mate purchased the Terry Gilliam film Tideland (2005). If you haven't seen it, Jeff Bridges plays an unorthodox parent who passes, leaving his daughter to wander off into a world of her own making. At the time we were all impressed by the performance of said actor....which seemed to belie her years etc.

Time passes, and I'm sitting in my mates watching the awful...

Conflicted

As you all know, I am about to be a daddy and today me and mam were talking about my dad and this is where I am conflicted.

My dad lives in Wales and he left me when I was 2. From then on he saw me every month and I even went to Manchester with him (where he is originally from) and my mam used to arrange the meets etc.

But overall he didn't seem to care about me and he adopted 2 children who he seemed to care more about.

Well the meetings stopped in...

MMA

I know sport talk is forbidden but don't worry it's got nothing to do with sport score or teams - it's just me mentioning UFC and WWE.

As you all know I watch WWE and UFC, but what really pisses me off is people claim MMA is fake and actually say it to my face.

I have found out they have an MMA club just down the road to me and I said to Claire "I am joining one" and she said no I don't want you too" and my sarcastic comment was "it's fake remember"...

I have just started Breaking Bad to see what all the hype is about and this opinion is going to get me hate.

To be honest I can't see the hype, I am on Season 2 and everytime I go to watch an episode I get the well I cannot be arsed feeling and I find myself just going through the motions, then by the end I think thank God that is over.

A TV show should not feel like that, it should draw you in with a vice grip. It might get better but at the minute i can't see that...

Posted 5th April 2014 at 02:05 PM by Bringer Of Funerals

This is going to be a short blog on what I have noticed over the yrs and it all goes down to one thing.

Every house of a woman's / ladies I've been too I've noticed they don't have game consoles in their bedrooms or under the TV.

I know us lads like the Playstations, X Boxes and Nintendo Wii consoles or whatever else you have but women don't seem to own anything like that.

If you haven't noticed and you pull a lass that you don't know on a night out and

Arguing

Posted 29th March 2014 at 02:50 PM by Bringer Of Funerals

As you all know I hate arguing and I try to stay away from it but every now and then it's unavoidable.

Anyway Claire and I have been arguing for the past 4 days. Over she wants a baby and I don't. She has just found out her sister is preg and she has it in her head that she wants a baby.

Claire watches shows like ONE BORN EVERY MINUTE and gets sucked into it all. Now she has found this out she keeps going on and on about it.

I know this sounds nasty but

Faster

Posted 26th March 2014 at 03:06 PM by Bringer Of Funerals
Updated 3rd April 2014 at 05:05 PM by Bringer Of Funerals

An ex-con sets out to avenge his brother's death after they were double-crossed during a heist years ago. During his campaign, however, he's tracked by a veteran cop and an egocentric hit man.

Revenge isn't a dish best served cold, it's a dish best served up by The Rock. Faster is the latest from the musclebound wrestler-turned-Action star, and it's a fast, no-nonsense, hard-hitting Action flick that's almost all about payback, justice, big guns, fast cars, pumped muscles, and relentless...

As you all know I have an ex called Linda who I was with for 5 1/2 yrs and we split because we argued a lot. You also know they got married and had children.

Well out the blue on Facebook I got a message from her husband saying if I don't leave her alone him, her dad and brother are going to beat me up. Even though I haven't spoke to her since 2009.

I think he needs to grow up. Also today I saw her brother and I asked about the message and he said "him and his...

Updated 31st October 2013 at 12:59 PM by Bringer Of Funerals

As you all know we all buy DVD and Blu Ray's and on here it's a film buff's heaven as we all share the same love.

So I buy the films I like and my mam and step dad go mental by saying "you buy too many" and "you need to stop" and "you buy crap".

Everytime I buy them they over react and acting like I've just murdered the Queen then had a wank over her body and it really annoys me. So now I have given up showing them what I have bought....

Shit that floats about in my head

Posted 28th August 2013 at 10:17 PM by Make Them Die Slowly

I thought I'd use this blog space to collate the shite that fills my head, some days to overload.

After roughly 25 years I've been thinking about writing poetry again. I used to do performance poetry in my younger days. My last performance involved walking across town carrying a 6 foot plus cross before being crucified after reciting the poem, "The Divine Lord Jason of the True Believers Ejaculating Jesus Cathedral Wants Your Soul". All this was done to the sound of a mate's...

Fwiends, Womans and countwymen...Part 4

Posted 14th August 2013 at 11:50 PM by troggi

I am going to zip through this period of the late 1960s as there were few changes until 1970.

It was '67-'68 when I became a junior schoolboy and we had a pretty new young teacher called Miss Griffiths. She was obviously too pretty because she soon became mrs. something-or-other and had to leave to have a baby but for now she was our Miss Griffiths. She took us on a trip to the City Museum at Weston Park, near the Sheffield University Arts Tower and the Henderson's Relish Factory...

It's 1966, just after Easter, and my third school in a year! We now live at number 89 Mason Lathe Road, Shiregreen, Sheffield. My dad now works at Ambrose Shardlow, crankshaft manufacturers in the Forge, he works on the 54 ton "Big Beshy" hammer and at night we can hear it and almost feel it's seismic force even though we live about a mile away from it. This hammer was the biggest in Europe at the time and stamped out of orange-hot steel billets some of the bigger crankshafts that the...

A friend saw Claire and she asked him if he had seen Curly (I'll explain who he is later) and he said no. Later Claire's brother came in and she asked him the same question. To which he replied yes he's in there pointing to the main room.

Well she couldn't get in there fast enough. Curly is a man...

I have taken a picture I have got about the film and its Director Ruggero Deodato. I hope other fans of this truly unique film will comment.

Spirits

Posted 10th June 2013 at 03:23 PM by Bringer Of Funerals

I was walking home from my girlfriends house and when I got to a building called Cheshire homes I saw a spirit walk past the entrance. Every night I see the same spirit walking past the same entrance, it then vanishes in the same spot.

I know it seems out there but im curious and I've believed in ghosts since I can remember

So my question is why do ghosts do the same thing and vanish in the same spot?

Salo: Breaking The Rules

Posted 27th May 2013 at 02:33 PM by Bringer Of Funerals

This piece originally appeared in the Criterion Collection’s 2008 DVD edition of Saló.

The year before he made Salò, or The 120 Days of Sodom, Pasolini hinted at the scandalous contours his last film would assume. In the course of a 1974 debate, he declared that now, as never before, “artists must create, critics defend, and democratic people support . . . works so extreme that they become unacceptable even to the broadest minds of the new State.” In large part, of course,...

Tommy (Joel) is an ex marine that is haunted by his past of almost drowning and dying which has made him go off the rails. Brendan on the other hand is an ex MMA fighter who is now a teacher and also has the perfect family but he has a problem, he has no money coming in and could lose his house.

No Van Damme in Timecop Remake

Posted 23rd May 2013 at 02:47 PM by Bringer Of Funerals

It has been officially announced by Universal that there will be no Jean-Claude Van Damme in Timecop remake, the upcoming movie obviously inspired by the sci-fi flick released back in 1994.

Everyone knows that all the movies from the Belgian actor became some kind of a “cult”, so is it wise to plan a remake of Peter Hyams’ film without Jean? Maybe Universal needs to stop and think for a second to what happened to Sony and the near disastrous performance of Total Recall without

A few weeks back I read Robert W chambers King in yellow. It's a good book and a reccomended read for fans of horror and fantay fiction. While jobless i've decided to dabble with a little creative writing and i've written a short story based on Chambers book. Its flawed and my writing skills need some work but as a first effort I dont think its terrible.

A not so random rambling.

Posted 25th March 2013 at 10:10 PM by troggi

I used to have a problem with words. Ordinary everyday words that just drip off of the tongue in an ordinary everyday way and then become unusable due to their being harnessed to a different meaning, usually sexual or social. "Queer" once meant unusual and "gay" was carefree and happy. These are just two examples of the most prominent changes in usage over the past fifty years.

I used to get the bus through Darnall, Sheffield, occasionally in the mid to late '70s.

Making a horror film happen

Posted 10th March 2013 at 01:56 PM by Backtrackfilm

Busy week ahead. We have a things going on in London and in between I'll be having my first meeting with a distributor, a well known producer and a well known agent. This experience overtakes everything but it suits me. We're all different of course and for some people, the crazy, all or nothing approach comes with too many risks and draconian sacrifices. The Spartan way has always attracted me though. I'm obviously a complete masochist. I like what Bukowski said about being committed to any artistic...

The nature of "my thing" #3

Posted 9th March 2013 at 10:29 PM by troggi

When I was very young I used to get British comics; The Eagle, Look and Learn, The Beano, The Dandy, The Buster, The Sparky, Topper, and Beezer. I loved them so much that there is one issue of The Sparky that I recall so well that it is ingrained on my psyche, I would give away organs to get that one issue again!

On Friday nights and Sunday lunchtimes we would go to Wincobank and Blackburn Working Men's Club and I would be bought a comic as a bribe to keep me quiet during "t'...

Hill Like Bosoms

Posted 8th March 2013 at 12:45 AM by Backtrackfilm

The idea for Backtrack all stems from the girlfriends I used to take up on to the South Downs in my youth. Just in case you don't know what they are, the Downs are a 70 mile long set of sloping chalk hills in Southern England. They look like a cross between hump-backed whales and huge green bosums. Maybe that's why I had some success with women up there - the environment was telling conducive!

The Devil has long been associated with Downs. We have a huge dent in the hills called...

Rookie Producer's Message to Horror Fans

Posted 6th March 2013 at 06:01 PM by Backtrackfilm

We tortured a production assistant on camera during our crowd funding campaign because we love you guys and want to entertain you all.

You're not supposed to do that. You're supposed to be nice. That's what 'they' say.

There are so many rules in life. Ignore them at your peril. Don't go looking for trouble. It doesn't need help finding you. Right there, that's true. But we don't always do the right thing do we? We tell ourselves to play the perfect courtier at all times...

We disgust people

Posted 6th March 2013 at 03:46 PM by Backtrackfilm

Hello to you all. My name is Haydn West and I am a producer. Backtrack Productions Ltd are currently working on our first feature which will be set on the South Downs.

A funny thing happened to us the other day. We were filming our crowdfunding video when the police turned up. They heard screaming. You can see the behind the scenes clip of the cop wandering on-set on our website.

We bucked the trend of making nice polite crowdfunding campaign videos by showing our production...

unemployment. 01/03/2013-02/03/2013

Posted 2nd March 2013 at 05:54 PM by keirarts

So far unemployment is dull, I'm applying for jobs, two a day minimum though some days its pretty tough as theres not a great deal about.
I think one of the main problems is if/when I get something it'll have nothing to do with films, the tedium of a regular days work waiting to get home. It dosent help that i'm painfully single right now as well. This wasnt an issue so much when I was working, I had a lot on my plate and plenty of friends so the few evenings I had to myself usually involved...

The nature of "my thing" #2

Posted 26th February 2013 at 08:58 PM by troggi

Of course films good or bad do not make up the whole of a person's cultural make-up. Culture is a very complicated attribute to categorise as any sociology student will tell you, at length if you'll let 'em. I like to keep stuff simple, like me, so I will only talk about what drove me down this trail we call "Cult" and not about the minutia of my tastes.

Of equal importance to film, or possibly greater judging by the sheer weight of subcultures spawned by it, is music. You

The nature of "my thing"

Posted 25th February 2013 at 09:01 PM by troggi

This snippet is about what is in my bag, man. Y' know, the cultural fripperies 'n' fineries that made me think I might feel at home at Cult Labs.

Way back in the halcyon days of my childhood, when summers were long and filled with the whirr of grasshoppers singin' in the tall dry grass and winters were bitterly cold and the snow drifted deeply, when I was in the second year of middle school (about year 4 in today's money) I remember an argument between Tubby Taylor and me. Ive decided to leave Youtube after ive uploaded everything ive recorded. The reason why is because some wanker by the name of Evergreen Social Media has decided to flag a video I made 2 yrs ago about my age. Sorry but they don't own copyright to my age (unless im missing something). Anyway this has made me have 2 strikes against my account.

Im sick of it now so ive decided to bid farewell on YT and all I wanted to do was show my dvd/blu ray film collection I have but people have ruined...

Cannibal Holocaust - Valid Social Document or Pure Exploitation?

Posted 20th December 2012 at 04:21 PM by Daemonia

Cannibal Holocaust. The mere mention of the title of Ruggero Deodato's infamous cannibal shocker has horror fans either championing it or attacking it without mercy. But just what is it about this film that so fiercely divides opinions? One thing is for certain though - Cannibal Holocaust leaves absolutely no room for sitting on the fence and that, I believe, is its intent.

So what is it that makes it so controversial? Is it the natives running around in Beatles wigs? Is it the sight...

Cult Ennui

Posted 3rd December 2012 at 12:32 AM by Make Them Die Slowly

I can't seem to get my cult groove on at the moment. The thought of watching those rare gems of filth and wonder that normally send a shiver down my spine and cause both a physical and metaphysical hard-on, just ain't cutting it with me at present. Men of my age normally start to suffer erectile dysfunction but I seem to have DVD dysfunction. It's like a mid-life crisis but rather than dumping Mrs MTDS for a younger woman, I've ditched the DVD player for a Blu-ray player. Sure, it was shiny and...

When it comes to cult Italian horror films, a few notorious names instantly spring to mind. From Lucio Fulci to Ruggero Deodato, Dario Argento and Mario Bava; there’s no doubt that these directors are some of the best names in cult Italian cinema. But with Shameless Screen Entertainment’s upcoming release of one of the greatest and most atmospheric gialli, The House With Laughing Windows, what better time than now, to look at the man responsible for this eerie thriller; Pupi Avati. Director: Steven Speilberg
Starting: Dennis Weaver

Here is my first film review. I will put up a spoiler tag when I think I am giving something away. So here it goes.

Yesterday was my very first viewing of Duel (which I think started as a Made-for-TV-Movie!), and it terrified me! As a passenger who has witnessed annoying tailgating and been in an accident with another vehicle, I really related at how terrifying this could be.

Duel is about a man...

This is my first blu ray/arrow video cover and I'd like to know any pro's or con's. The text that says 'He's a human killing machine' is from the cover of 'Red Scorpion'. The tagline I...

Time to stop region locking discs?

Posted 23rd May 2012 at 08:52 AM by keirarts

Anyone else fed up with region locked blue-rays? Personally I love my ps3, it has great playback and is very easy to update, unfortunately its also difficult at best to make multi region, and any attempt to do so will be thwarted by the next firmware update.

So recently I picked up a blue-ray double bill of KEOMA/GRAND DUAL released by a company called mill creek. Everything they released up till now was totally region-free, and as the discs were so damned cheap it was well worth...

I thought I'd better post something or I may slip into one of those things where I just stop blogging then return six months later to an unfinished story. So heres an emoticon for the meantime:

Emerald Mystery - Part Two

Posted 3rd April 2012 at 07:34 AM by GiveAgainGoldenStars

Part Two
The hospital felt empty a shadow of once a great and valuable institution of a small country town.
“So” the almost ancient male doctor looked at my wound “explain to me again”
“There was a girl on the side of the highway” I began to explain “she looked so sad like she needed help I pulled over and then-“
“Yes” he snarled “I thought I got it. I do hope you don’t make a habit of pulling over for strangers.”
“No” I replied...

Emeral Mystery - Part One

Posted 27th March 2012 at 08:56 AM by GiveAgainGoldenStars

Part One
The Darkness swallowed dark hair and purple gown so that all was left was the faint crunching of leves beneath her feet, growing fainter by the second. I new that I needed to follow her. As I went to run I felt a sharp pain around my anckle the noise of my scream seemed to echo around the forest.
My leg was soaked in blood as I pulled the animal trap from my foot. I used a towl from my car to bandage the wound, I considered waiting on the edges of the forest for an ambulence...

Happy March the 13th

Posted 13th March 2012 at 11:57 AM by GiveAgainGoldenStars

I have not been here in quite some time, but I'm hoping to get back into the swing of things.

Lately I've been craving the keyboard and in the spirit of the '13th' felt maybe it was time to post a story. I'm currently in the middle of a new one and am far to tired to commplete it tonight. So instead here is another one I would have written at around 15.

Gojira (1954) / Godzilla, King of the Monsters (1956)

Posted 16th February 2012 at 12:25 PM by thelostclassics

This review appears on my website: www.thelostclassics.com

So, this is where it all began. With over two dozen film appearances, a children’s cartoon and an American remake to his name. Godzilla, like his foe in the 1963 ‘lost classic’ King Kong, has almost become a by-word for giant monsters. He has had many different roles in the movies hero, villain, environmentalist, cosmic avenger, father… it’s difficult to remember that he began life as a menace born of the atomic...

Near Dark (1987)

Posted 16th February 2012 at 12:19 PM by thelostclassics

The following review appears on my website: www.thelostclassics.com

With huge franchises like Twilight and popular TV shows such as True Blood and The Vampire Diaries as well as literally thousands of vampire romances covering bookshelves and appearing on Kindles. It's perhaps difficult now to think that there was a time when the vampire sub genre was no great shakes. But following Hammer closing up shop in the mid 70s very few vampire movies were released. Sure there was Blacula...

new year....same old frothing

Posted 10th January 2012 at 12:34 PM by Demoncrat

since rereading my last blog (the shitter8 one) and having noticed its incoherence, i&i have resolved to being more evenhanded and fair in my treatment of mainstream cinema. why, just this last year hollywood gave us lovely N E W versions of crappy old films (pooh! who wants to see them...) such as The Thing and Straw Dogs. What an improvement! none of that nasty subtext etc.
since they went to all the trouble of this, why stop there? lets spruce up every film! shia la bouf as citizen...

happy new year.

Posted 1st January 2012 at 08:16 PM by keirarts

Well, its been a pretty crappy new year in most respects, fortunately theres been more than a few good home entertainment releases that help take my mind off it.
We're living in what the chinese refer to as 'interesting times'. When they refered to interesting times they meant it as a curse and it's not to hard to see why. The whole global economy is on life support, and needing constant resussatation to make sure it dosent fall asleep amd never wake up, the world energy resources are dwindling...

The Dead Walk

Posted 9th November 2011 at 11:08 AM by wayfarer

With all the talk of ZFE and it's awesome Blu-Ray release by Blue Underground, it took me to thinking about the first time that I saw it. Whilst I thought about it, I realised that I'd seen the Fulci Quadrilogy of Terror later than I might have previously led people to believe.

My family got our first VHS player in what i thought was Autumn 1982 but it could have been 1983. Anyway, what I do accurately remember is not being interested in the zombie genre until I saw Michael Jackson's...

441 - Full Film.

Posted 8th November 2011 at 04:13 PM by Philleh

Hey guys,

I've uploaded our first short film; it was made for only £5.99 - believe me, it shows - by a bunch of first timers who didn't know a thing about filmmaking and was basically a filmschool for us and we learnt a lot from the mistakes we made (no script, lighting, or sound being but a few!).

Anyways, take a look if you have a spare 10mins and let me know what you think.

I would love to see Joe D'Amato's sequel to Anthropophagous The Beast 'Absurd' released in the UK, it would appear the BBFC would pass it without cuts, years ago I was talking to VIPCO and they were going to pursue releasing it after a meeting with them but unfortunately they have now closed their doors but I think this would make a great Shameless or Arrow DVD/BD release

Depraved DPP Darlings With Damaged Brains - Audience and Appeal

Posted 19th July 2011 at 04:06 PM by necroluciferia

Given that modern audiences are accustomed to highly sophisticated special effects that were inconceivable even for Hollywood productions 25 years ago, it is a reasonable assumption that today many Video Nasties are difficult to take seriously. Paul Navarro, ex. Film Examiner at the British Board Of Film Classification (BBFC), doubts the films would appeal to many contemporary horror fans, given that they are ‘rather passé by current standards’. The recent efforts from Arrow Film and Shameless...

Something Appalling In The Annals Of Horror Putting The Video Nasties Into Context

Posted 19th July 2011 at 04:04 PM by necroluciferia

It is difficult to define what makes a film a Video Nasty, as there are no generic, creative characteristics that link them together. The term was invented in the 1980s to refer to disparate collection of films that were criticized in the press for their excessive levels of violence, and were subsequently banned by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on the grounds that they were obscene and likely to deprave and corrupt viewers. The Video Nasties debacle brought about major change in the...

Film review - NIKOS THE IMPALER (Andreas Schnaas)

Posted 11th May 2011 at 09:52 AM by necroluciferia

Before you watch this, you need to understand that German splatter is basically about taking everything that is bad about filmmaking and, with the exception of Jorg Buttgereit, you’re unlikely to find any real cinematic masterpieces. I’ve suffered through various Olaf Ittenbach movies and that was basically enough to tell me I was on to something pretty awful. So, having fairly low expectations of Nikos...

Film review - CALVAIRE

Posted 11th May 2011 at 09:37 AM by necroluciferia

There have been some great French language films in recent years and Fabrice Du Welz’s feature length debut is no exception (despite being Belgian!). The setting here is one you’ll probably be familiar with; urbanite gets lost in a rural village and falls victim to crazy hicks, but this is hardly a braindead slasher and the film has it’s own unique little twist on things....

Greetings film lovers and cult film afficianados. My name's Daniel...howdy. Currently I've produced a documentary on the nature of cult films and am trying to show it around and promote it the best ways I know possible. But without money, I'm not going to bleed myself dry promoting a short documentary. Not only do short films rarely go anywhere so do documentaries...so I don't know how much hope that gives me spending more of my own money than I...

A calamity of snakes (or the things you get for a fiver on amazon!)

Posted 20th April 2011 at 04:52 PM by keirarts

Theres a little consumer game I play on Amazon. If there's a spare few quid knocking about on my account I go on to Amazon, search for horror movies, select horror in the genre toolbar then narrow the search down to films under five quid. Try it you'd be surpised by some of the things you find on there!

Firstly you've got your supermarket horror, you know the stuff I mean, Dead silence, candyman, the children... Not BAD films per-se theres just an awful lot of them out there clogging...

the shock of the now?

Posted 15th April 2011 at 07:28 PM by plasterface

I'll be honest i am a gorehound, i am a film buff but horror is my daily vitamins and after over 15years of watching every type of horror giallio, slasher , splatter, psychological etc etc.. I am wondering wether mainstream horror is still scary or have i been jaded by feasting on horror like a big fat vulture? I ask the question as over the last six years or so a series of "terrorfying" movies have been released . Now before i start my attack of these films, i must state despite been...

R.I.P Dr Harris.

Posted 3rd April 2011 at 04:29 PM by keirarts

It is our sad duty at this time to report the tragic death of esteemed new orleans physician and good samaritan Dr harris who died yesterday evening in what police are describing as a 'freak glazing accident'. Originally named simon hull the good doctor changed his name to Harris to avoid any connections with his now famous yautsman brother Brian hull (pictured below) who died in a now legendary Zombie outbreak on the remote carribean island of matool.

One day we may all be downloading films.

Posted 30th March 2011 at 05:57 PM by keirarts

Ok, first and formost I do not believe that film piracy is right, not when decent quality versions of films are available legally. Ok now thats out the way an admission....

onece upon a time I used to buy pirated movies. Not the dodgy cam versions of big screen multiplex fodder though, mainly cult horror. Back before dvd, in the golden age of VHS there were few ways to get decent cult movies. The main and most legitimate way was to run the gauntlet of customs and excise with your...

When is a horror movie not a horror movie?

Posted 18th March 2011 at 06:04 PM by keirarts

Answer: When its a psychological thriller.
When its a meditation on faith.
When its a spiritual detective story.

Plainly and simply its when your a director whose made a horror film and your a little embarressed about the fact!

If like me, you spent your formative years in the late eighties and nineties, as the italian film industry wheezed its last and Horror all but dissappered you may have noticed how the genre was ometimes 're-defined....

When reality intrudes....

Posted 16th March 2011 at 11:33 PM by keirarts

Ever gone off a movie? By that I mean a film you previously either liked or loved then one day you find something out about the people involved or the production.
I raise this point namely after recently selling my copy of victor salva's clownhouse on Amazon, and already I wonder if I made the right decision. In case anyone is wondering, clownhouse is the story of three brothers left alone overnight in an isolated house. Earlier in the evening the boys visit the circus and the younger brother...

Get Prisoner back on UK TV

Posted 27th February 2011 at 04:27 PM by Rhodeslady

Hey guys, lets all come together and get writing to the likes of CBS Drama, Channel 5 and Dave, and let them know we want our favourite show back on air!
It is great that the show has been released on DVD format, but not everyone can afford to buy them, maybe, so it would be great to see it on TV again. Also finding a brand new audience, I'm sure!

We can do this if we work on it!

Notes for your listening pleasure...

Turn down the bass around 37 minutes and back up around 40. I couldn't get rid of the fuzz without losing the ridiculous sense of space.

There are clipping errors and glitches all over the place, it's better that way.

It's mostly samples fed through cheap FX until everything floats about. Feel free to fall asleep halfway through. Some parts are designed to be trippy and

Splatter

Posted 6th February 2011 at 05:00 PM by Bringer Of Funerals

Hello and welcome to another blog, in this blog I will be talking about the splatter film.

Many people like horror because they like the feeling of being scared, now I find that a good psychological film scares me - it's the feeling of dread and not knowing what is going to happen and when.

These are also known as ghost stories example being Ring, A Tale Of Two Sisters and The Eye. The feeling I get from them is like I said dread and that is to me a good horror....

Spaghetti Westerns

Posted 4th February 2011 at 09:04 PM by Bringer Of Funerals

My 1st experience with the sub genre of the Spaghetti Western was when I bought the DOLLARS TRILOGY starring the great Clint Eastwood and I have to admit I never knew what a Spag Western was. Obviously I had heard of Westerns eg John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and others and I just thought that was a posh name for a few.

Then I had read deeper into the Western genre and it turned out they were made on a low budget and made in Italy, Spain and Germany. It was an answer to...

M. Night Shyamalan

Posted 1st February 2011 at 01:56 PM by Bringer Of Funerals

To me, Shyamalan's work is much closer to that of filmmakers like Lynch, Zulawski, Hartley and Weerasethakul; it's that strange mixture of the abstract and the conventional, with stylised performances and dialog that doesn't even attempt to sound realistic because everything in the film is designed in order to achieve a specific emotional response.

Unlike those filmmakers, Shyamalan releases art-films to a mainstream audience, but still fully embraces the same quirks, eccentricities...

Relationships: A Night Out

Posted 25th January 2011 at 04:00 PM by Bringer Of Funerals

I have been in a relationship to 2 yrs now and to a degree I am happy, I like the way she treats me, she's loving towards me and cares a lot to me as all relationships should be like.

Anyway I went down town on a night out with my friend and he ended up pulling (of all people) my ex's niece.

As he was dancing with her I had 3 lasses dancing round me, 1 gorgeous and 2 ok but I ended up pulling 1 of the ok ones.

My friend pissed off and I ended up going...

See No Evil

Posted 6th January 2011 at 07:35 PM by Bringer Of Funerals

I had first heard of this film through advertising via WWE, and I thought this film should be rather good, it had Kane a 7 ft man as a killer. Then I bought the film and enjoyed it.

Even though it was straight to dvd (a slasher film as well), I found the deaths rather inventive and the charactor's had some depth to them. There was obviously the key people - the slut, good girl, bad arse im hard bloke etc and the dialogue needed some work but I did enjoy it.

Plus Kane...

2011: A New Year In Horror

Posted 1st January 2011 at 11:51 AM by Bringer Of Funerals

Well now it's 2011 and hopefully there will be some decent horror films out this year.

We already know Arrow have an impressive line up of horror gems from the past already kicking off with DEEP RED.

Last year we were swamped by gay vampires in the TWILIGHT films and then on it seemed every book was vampire based.

Anyway I am looking forward to the DVD release of A SERBIAN FILM (even if it is cut) and ordering other films such as the EC Entertainment...

Anal Horror Fans

Just skimming reviews of some of arrows new releases and looking at some of the reviews, does anyone else get a little embarressed by some of the anal comments regarding transfers? I've encountered these bores at film festivals who harp on about how your not a real fan unless you own the obscure overpriced german version which is MILES better quality.

Ok Arrows City of the living dead is the BEST version, for picture sound and extras, as is their release of Dawn Of The Dead. I wont...

Problems (Pt 2)

Posted 28th December 2010 at 05:56 PM by Bringer Of Funerals

Today out of the blue, I got a message on Facebook from my ex (referred to in Pt 1) asking how I am.

I replied and after a long conversation she admitted that she regrets marrying the lad she's with now, misses me and wishes she was back with me.

Apparently everytime she sees me in the streets she wishes she was back with me and she has repressed feelings about me.

So now I don't know how to deal with the problem that she has told me. She said she still...

Original Concepts (Are There Any?)

Posted 10th December 2010 at 05:01 PM by Bringer Of Funerals

In cinema (Horror and other Genres), the directors of the films we see say "oh yes, go and see my film and you will be taken on a ride like no other because there are things in there that people have never seen before".

We go see the film and guarenteed there will be things we have seen from other films just put in a different way.

Take the film SAW, everyone has seen the film so they know what it's like, and everyone says its original.

But...

Vampire Rant

Posted 9th December 2010 at 04:23 PM by Bringer Of Funerals

As you all know there have been plenty of vampire films from the silent horror Nosferatu to the Hammer Horror films with Christopher Lee and even Let The Right One In, Salem's Lot and others.

To me a vampire should be scary as hell and make you turn white with terror and you should be scared to go to sleep at night.

What I don't like is the TWILIGHT crap, the vampires that are gay and watch as you sleep while a light show reflects off their forehead.

I am quite open minded when it comes to horror, unlike many teenagers who think a horror film needs to be in the cinema to be good otherwise it's crap.

I on the other hand look forward to films coming straight to dvd other then the cinema.

And on my search many years ago for horror -mainly Vipco Vaults Of Horror films at the time I came across a little known studio who released many genre films - Action, Thriller, Adventure, Horror among others.

Now I don't know about you lot but when I watch 60's - 80's horror films I like to see the grain/black flickers etc of dust on the film I am watching, it added a certain Grimy/Grindhouse feel to the film.

It adds to it like they have been sat in a vault for so long and they are happy to see the light of day.

A few examples is City Of The Living Dead, Zombie Flesh Eaters, and there are too many horror films to mention.

Thats why...
