Default Fave opening lines of books

So what are your favourite opening lines to any books (fiction or non-fiction doesn't matter).

One of my faves is from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas:

"We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold."

"It was a queer, sultry summer, the summer they electrocuted the Rosenbergs, and I didn't know what I was doing in New York."

My local The Works shop has both Trainspotting books on sale cheap at the minute, I had a quick look at them the other day and realised I'd struggle to read them because of the Scottish prose
Tolkien is easier to understand
