Half way through 'The Twelve', by Justin Cronin - the follow up to the brilliant 'The Passage'.
This second part (of a planned three) is even better than the first. Highly recommended, especially if you enjoyed the big post-apocalyptic horror novels of the 80's & 90's - 'The Stand', 'Swan Song', 'Domain' etc.

I just finished Jean Ray's 1943 Gothic horror novel, Malpertuis. Great stuff too, Ray's only full length novel, translated from the French, which recalls Lovecraft and Poe. It was adapted into a film from Harry Kümel (Daughters of Darkness) starring Orson Welles, which fascinated me enough to seek out the book, as the film leaves much unanswered. The book is far more vivid, grotesque, and .. unlike the film .. eventually explains all in a satisfying conclusion (the book recounts the tale of Malpertuis via different authors, although in the main, one young protagonist tells the bulk of the tale.)

The film is beautiful, but vague, and a rather truncated version of the novel. The liner notes helped me comprehend it, but the book really fleshed it out, so I'm itching to re-watch it now. It's just a shame much of Ray's more unusual imagery or plot strands didn't (or more likely, couldn't) make it on to the screen.

Currently not reading any novels, but the Ampney Crucis Investigates: Vile Bodies. Loving Crucis in the prog at the moment and the last serial a year ago was a favourate of mine in my early day's in the fold. LOVELY art from Simon Davis in this and alot of nod's to classic horror. Also pre-ordered Marshal Law: Deluxe Edition.

Currently coming to the end of First Novel by Nicholas Royle. It's rather good, but as with his previous books will require at least one retread to fully understand what's actually going on. Royle is a great writer, and editor, whose work exists on the edges of the horror genre.

In addition I have also been reading some horror shorts in the form of The screaming book of Horror which has some excellent stories from most of those who currently dominate the small press/independent horror scene in the U.K.

It's not just you as it is a great title, both elegant and thought-provoking. The book is brilliant as well so, whether you haven't read it before or it's a well thumbed copy, enjoy!
