I read Ghost House last year, it was an easy read but I wasn't that impressed, was full of characters doing stupid things, like throwing a kids party when there's a psychotic spirit on the rampage.

I've been reading some classic stuff that i'd never gotten around to, but last week or so hit a bit of a brick wall, kept starting stuff and thinking, i'm not in the mood for this.

So to try and get back on track decided to go with something easy that I read as a kid, so now i'm halfway through the Iron man.

So this is my recent stuff-

Is The Iron Man the same as The Iron Giant movie?

Started reading this Hungry Beat that I got for Xmas.
An oral history of Scotland's independent music scene (77 - 84), enjoying this so far and will probably finish it this week.

The Iron man is what inspired the Iron giant, but it's very simple compared to the film, he's just going around eating farm machinery so far, but there's a kid called Hogarth like the film and he rebuilds himself when destroyed as well.

Only about 60 pages long, remember reading it in primary school classes.

The Iron Man is a wonderful book, one I remember my parents reading to me when I was young and I read it myself when I was old enough. I'm sure the copy I have had the same monochrome cover illustration as the one you bought.

The imagery at the beginning of the titular character assembling itself is very evocative and the showdown with the brilliantly named space-bat-angel-dragon is very powerful.

If you read it Peter, forget about Rats: Nights Of Terror, its a whole different story altogether. Do recommend The Rats, Lair and Domain as a back to back read.

The Iron Giant was the first fiction book that I read completely on my own.

Just finished The Pet by Charles L. Grant

It's a Carrie-esque story about a teenager who can summon a demonic horse that protects him from his tormenters. The horse of course cannot tell between true hatred and intense frustration with loved ones and chaos ensues.

Being an 80s book it's very King-like, but I think CLG is actually a better writer than King. Although the book is reasonable length CLG feels more economical in his style and avoids King's tendency to over-write things. The high school milieu is well rendered, with for the most part believable teens and the usual flawed adults.

Debits were that it was sometimes hard to empathise with the main character who didn't seem to have it that bad compared to a lot of bullied teens I knew and despite his best efforts it's hard to buy into a horse being scary, even one that strikes green sparks from it's hooves and is continuously swathed in mist.

Overall an entertaining read, but I'm not sure it deserves it's place in Kim Newman and Stephen Jones's 100 best horror books list?
