The legend is (I'm not sure about the film) it was close to where I grew up we even had a school trip to it

It is set in Derbyshire, but Peter Capaldi plays a Scottish archaeologist, who discovers the remains of the 'd'Ampton worm'.

The Lambton worm is a fable about a worm which was slain on the River Wear in Sunderland.

This is from Wikipedia:
The story revolves around John Lambton, an heir of the Lambton Estate, County Durham, and his battle with a giant worm (dragon) that had been terrorising the local villages. As with most myths, details of the story change with each telling.

Yeah, years ago I worked on the Dobbies Garden Centre in Birtley, and we stayed at the Lambton Worm pub down the road in Chester-Le-Street. I was the only one of us who knew what it meant, because of the film
