Untill we get the 'Games' prefix added to the reviews I thought anyone with any game news or reviews could post on this Thread.

X-BOX 360 PRICE CUT.

Anybody thinking of buying an X-BOX 360 should wait a while as another price drop is due.
I was told by a friend who's senior manager of a leading gaming store of the forthcoming pricedrop, and this was confirmed when Woolworth let the 'cat outta the bag' by printing it in their Christmas catalouge.
The price dop is 30 pounds off each 360 model , which will mean the cheapest X 360 package will now start at 129 pounds.
MS have confirmed the price drop to 1 of the internet gaming sites but have yet to announce it publicly .
The price drop to due on the run up to Christmas.

Oooh! Great thread Vips! And a brilliant piece of advice there too :) I love gaming lol! Whats you fav game/s?

vipco 17th September 2008 11:00 PM

My fav games.

Im currently using PS3 only console ways as my 360 'Red Ringed' and I never replaced it, though with this price drop I can see another X360 heading my way soon.

Well every year I update my EA Sports range ( NFL, NBA, NHL, FIFA, Tigerwoods, Nascar ) and Need for Speed. Plus this year EA are releasing the NCAA college football (US) and basket ball in the UK.
I recon Madden NFL is my fav, im playing Madden NFL 09 at the mo, as well as TNA Wrestling , Skate and MX vs ATV as im a big race fan.

I mainly buy US sports and Racing games plus the odd FFS.

i also use PSP though I play mainly Xtreme sports and Wrestling on it.

I HATE Puzzle games or games with a big puzzle eliment in the gameplay, like Tomb Raider, and I also HATE Platformers.

How about you mate, what do you like.?

Come to think of it, how many Gamers we got here and what are you playing.?

vincenzo 17th September 2008 11:17 PM

I only play PC games on occasions. Because I prefer to run Win 98 I mainly stick to the older (and much more entertaining) classic games. Age Of Empires, Tomb Raider, the classic Carmageddon, Quake and Resident Evil etc.

Because Win 98 is easy for DOS games I've also got Doom (and sequels), the hilarious Duke Nukem, Wolfenstein 3D, Alone In The Dark, and over 200 original arcade games built in to the MAME 32 emulator. Hours of fun.

vipco 17th September 2008 11:47 PM

I had Wolfenstein 3D on the Atari Jaguar, its a classic game.

Have you ever played a game called Quarantine , Vince.?( Forgive spelling)
I had it on the 3DO in the 90's and its like Doom in a Taxi. Brilliant game. It was a PC game ported over to 3DO.

TALL DUDE 18th September 2008 08:19 AM

Showing my age here, but im right into the retro stuff of late. Pac man collection, galaga, dig dug, golden axe,all the stuff i played as a kid.
That gameboy advance was the best birthday present i ever bought my sons.;)

Cheers for the heads up on the x-box 360,as the kids are angling for one for their xmas.:)

Paul@TheOverlook 18th September 2008 08:24 AM

The really old skool platformers and puzzlers hold up really well and I still play the likes of 'New Zealand Story', 'Bubble Bobble' and 'Rainbow Islands' on my PSP. Alot of the other games I loved as a kid, such as 'Chase HQ' and 'Operation Wolf' haven't held up at all, so retro games are a bit of a minefield, in terms of quality.

Games for the latest generation of consoles are so much more involved; I'm lovonmg 'GTA IV' on the PS3; it's such a great game. Loved 'Uncharted: Drake's Fortune' and although it was brief and not particularly inovative, I quite enjoyed 'Stranglehold'.

OMG! I LUV DOS games!!!!!!! I really luv that old retro 80's feel - i wish i couldve been there! The games you mentioned are brilliant too. Did you know you can download tones of DOS games of the internet for free and completly legally mate? They're really good - I play them on MS-DOS as it wont work on the comp unless I download that :)

Besides those games, I'd say my fav are, "Dead Rising" (AMAZING!), "Resident Evil 4", "GTA", "Timespliters 3", and ALL "Burnout" games!

:)

They're all great games Vincenzo, Duke Nukem will always be one of my favourites, I used to love playing that as a kid, I really liked the later ones for playstation aswell like Time to Kill and Land of the Babes. Anyone remember a series of DOS games called Commander Keen? I recently downloaded them onto my PC as it's another childhood favourite.

Recently i've been playing retro games on my PS2 as I bought a few of those Mega Drive and Acade classics discs featuring stuff like Final Fight, Streets of Rage, Street Fighter 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog and stuff. The original Mortal Kombat games were always favourites of mine too.

vipco 18th September 2008 10:01 AM

Speaking of Burnout, theres a new download available from today that gives you 2 motorbikes, Night to day cycle, Rain, 35 extra races and 70 events, all for free.

I had a Atari Jaguar and a 3DO when I started Gaming seriously . Two great underratted consoles.

I have these to,for my boys ps2. Final fight is great in two player mode, bloody hard in one player. Golden axe 1,2,3 are also pretty good.

Duke nukem: time to kill is great with the cheat codes on. You can run about with the rpg splattering baddies left right and centre without any loss of life.Great fun!

vipco 18th September 2008 03:35 PM

Do you know TD that you can get a media set that enables you to play your PS2 games on a PS2 upscaled to Hi Def.?
It cost @ 20 quid and its from Datel.
Not sure if it upscales your DVD's played on PS2, but it definetly allowes the games to run in HD.

Yes it's great fun even now. As much as I enjoy Doom and Unreal there's something about Duke Nukem 3D (just checked and mine is the Atomic Edition). Carmageddon (plus the sequel Carpocalypse Now) and House Of The Dead are a couple more I've just found on my games disc - plus GTA: London.

My favourites are GTA, and the Resident Evil and Burnout games. Talking of Ghosts And Goblins, have you played the PS2 versions, Maximo, and Maximo 2 : Army of Zin? They are fantastic games.

Yeah, I still love playing it, I bought it for my PC (Duke Nukem 3D) a while back and it's still a lot of fun. The one liners and little extras like being able to use the urnials etc :D are great.
I bought the original Doom trilogy a bit ago aswell. The first one does seem a bit too outdated now but Doom II and Final Doom are fun. Same goes for Quake and Quake II which I still play on my PS now and again.

vincenzo 18th September 2008 11:29 PM

Quake 3: Arena is rip-roaring stuff. The original Unreal is great too.

I downloaded the full Duke Nukem 3D a while back from a vintage games site. Also got House Of The Dead 1 & 2, the scarce Wolfenstein sequel Spear Of Destiny, and the old Windows classic X-Com: UFO Defense. Great stuff.

I'm a fan of the Metal Gear series, although the last one was a bit disappointing due to it being way too easy and nothing more than a CGI movie that you interact with every now and again.

On a different note, some genius thought it would be a good idea to release Fallout3 the same day as LittleBigPlanet.

Halloween_22 19th September 2008 10:25 AM

Resident Evil 2 will always be my favourite out of the series I think. Nemesis, Res 4 and Code Veronica are great games aswell and the first ones a classic but I'll always prefer 2 personally. Loved the concept of playing it from both sides and it features some of the best creatures from the series, the boss fights against William Birkin were brilliant.

Anyone ever play Resident Evil: Survivor? that was awful :ack:

Survivor was the light gun game, were it not?
Got bored with this way to quickly,no replay value at all.
Res 2 was the very first game i played on the ps1. That scene in the gun shop where the zombies crash through the window actually made me jump.

My young nephew, after playing it,was too scared to go up the stairs himself when he went home that night. Job done!:D

Yeah Tall Dude, thats the one. Resi Evil's House of the Dead rip off. Terrible game, your right, no replay value at all, You couldn't even save it. Not that it really mattered, I bought it when it came out, took it home and completed it within an hour :ack: What a waste of money. Needless to say I never bothered with the second one :D

The gun shop scene in Res 2 was great, I remember one bit in the police station making me jump out of my skin at the time, I think it was when all those zombie arms burst through the boarded up wall just as you walk past it lol.

GAME have started selling the X Box 360 at the new RRP of 129.99 with a free game.

The top of the range model the 'elite' HDMI 360 with built in DVD Upscaling should see a price drop of 30 to 50 pounds off its current pricepoint.

This is an offical price drop by MS and effects all the price of all 360's no matter where there sold.

This should see the price of pre owned 360's drop to under 100 quid with a years warranty.

NossB 20th September 2008 08:53 AM

I've just downloaded this Zombie game from the PSN:

The Last Guy. It's pretty good if you like back to basics games, you do need a huge TV to play it on though.

Res 5 does look like a good game, a big departure from old resi evil style though. Dont know how setting it predominantly outdoors in sunny desert type enviroments will fare. Should be interesting, I guess they couldn't keep setting them in creepy old mansions and stuff forever lol.

vipco 20th September 2008 11:10 AM

They say that when your in the sun you'll have hordes of zombies to fight, but when you go indoors it'll be pitch black and thats when all the creepy bits happen.
Sounds like it could work.

PS3 Controller. NYKO Rumble Pad - 25-35 pounds

If like me you find the PS3 Controller a tad to small then there's a 3rd party Rumble Controller due to hit the UK market from NYKO.
Its made of a mix of ABS and aluminium to keep it cool and free from sweaty hands.
The face buttons are blacklit for easy identification in a dark room, and the D pad is slightly tilted for a more natural feel.
Booth analouge sticks are strong and responsive.
The pad comes in several colours.

The only down side is its not Blue Tooth, but uses a 'dongle' and built in battery for wireless connection, though this is no big deal, but it does take up 1 of your controller ports on the PS3.
Looks ways its like a cross of the current 360 pad and the PS3 pad .

I was lucky enough to get alone of a promo model from a mate who's manager in a game store that they had for demo purpose , for a playtest and it was superb.

I tried it with the aweful TNA IMPACT.
Wrestlers resonded immeditly to each button press and the rumble was on a par, if not slightly more powerful , as the Sony offical pad.

Over all, if you can wait on Rumble in your games or are looking for a 2nd less expensive Rumble Pad, then you cant go far wrong with the NYKO.
Its well made and imo a really good games pad.

Although not available in UK stores yet, the pad can be bought from NYKO themselves, or GameStop US.

Reviews

I was told that Shameless will be adding a Games prefix to the review section.

I have a large library of PS3 and PSP games I could review from , but was wondering (Hoping) if anyone else with X360, PS3, Wii, PC, PSP, DS, or any other games format would be interested in posting reviews as well for whatever console they own.

What do you think of a Games review thread.?
Good idea or waste of time.?

Let me know.

trench 20th September 2008 06:24 PM

I think a games thread would be great. I don't keep up with games or play them that often, except when one of my big favourites come out, but I'd certainly enjoy reading some reviews.

It's a good idea.

Halloween_22 22nd September 2008 03:08 PM

Yeah, a games review thread would be great. I dont really keep up with all the new games (hell, I dont even have a 360 or PS3 yet ) I just dont have the time for them. But yeah, I agree with Trench, It'd be a good read, go for it.

Anyone ever play Half Life? That games superb, one of the greatest, if not the the greatest first person shooter of all time. I've played that through about six times, it's so damn good, I just never get bored of it.

vipco 22nd September 2008 04:05 PM

I played Half Life. Your right it is a good FPS, though I thought the sequel was to pulzley .

A PS3's a good piece of kit Hal, you get a BluRay player which is regulary updated by download to keep it at the cutting edge of Hi Def Tech , a Web Browser, which gives full internet access, ( Thats how I surf), a DVD Upscaler, 7.1 sound, True HD Gaming, (360 dos'nt do True HD), A 10 year support promise from Sony to support the system and keep it updated in all tech areas, plus many add ons including a Digital TV box witch can pause and record live TV. Not bad for under 300 quid, with a possible price cut or money saving bundle coming soon.
An HD TV is needed to ger the full benfits outta the machine though.
Plus it will be a few years yet before developers get full preformance outta the games cpu's in PS3 were as the X360 will be maxed out with the next generation of games according to some developers.

Thats not to say the 360's not a good Gaming machine, cos it is an excellent games console, and with a 129.99 starting price point i'll be picking one up soon for the MS exclusives.
BTW, The 360 wont Upscale DVD's unless its the black 'Elite' model. RRP 259.99.

Halloween_22 22nd September 2008 05:15 PM

I've been meaning to pick one up for ages vip's just haven't got round to it, and i never seem to have any time to get down to some serious gaming. I think what with the price drop I might have to finally invest in a 360. It's definatley worth it for that price.

Still, thats not bad for ps3 either. If I you can get them for under 300 quid now then thats definatley worth bearing in mind aswell.

trench 22nd September 2008 09:20 PM

Just did a bit of searching around about the Xbox upscaling sd dvd's, seems it does as long as the Xbox has a HDMI connection (or use the VGA). Here's some more info :

Ever since the Spring Dashboard Update, the Xbox 360 DOES upscale normal DVDs, over VGA and HDMI. I.E., for a normal DVD to display in resolutions up to 1080, you do NOT need an HD-DVD player. Source is over at coldforged.org
http://www.coldforged.org/archives/2...nd-hd-dvd-faq/

Q. Does the Xbox 360 upscale standard DVD movies?

A. Absolutely, but only if you’re using the VGA or HDMI connection. During the so-called “Spring Dashboard Update” Microsoft enabled DVD upscaling over the VGA connection — and upscaling over HDMI has been there since the introduction of the HDMI AV cable — so if you’re using VGA or HDMI you’ll see movies in whatever resolution you’ve set in the dashboard. However, this is only over VGA or HDMI. Also, with Fall Dashboard Update, standard DVD movies will be upscaled to 1080p on displays that support it, again only over the VGA connection or the HDMI connection.

Probably doesn't play R2's or Divx (although now that I think about it there may be an update available to enable Divx compatability, not sure)

Gonna pick me up a cheap upscaling dvd player anyway, it'll probably give better quality playback than the Xbox.

vipco 23rd September 2008 12:38 AM

Only the 239.99 quid black X 360 is HDMI, the other Grey models have no HDMI socket, only Component for HD Playback.
The grey X360's, 129.99 up , can only Prog Scan outta the box, you have to down load that patch you mentioned Trench.
Its good to see MS has finally added DVD upscaling. When I had mine it only played DVD's , DVD-R's etc in SD but mine was a launch model so im sure the 360 has more features now.

An HD DVD Player Add On was brought out for X360 but is now disconinued due to HD DVD losing the HD Formar war.
Although some shops still have stock the add on, the once 100 quid plus RRP is marked down to 20 to 29 quid depending were you shop.

Good link Trench, one all X360 owners would be advised to check out to make sure their getting the most outta their console.

trench 23rd September 2008 01:29 PM

All of the latest xbox 360's come with a hdmi connection, whether it's the Arcade, Pro or Elite. I can speak from first hand experience on the Pro model, I got one a few months ago :)

vipco 27th September 2008 12:08 AM

Are you sure Trench,?
According to GAME's Online store the 129 .99 is not HDMI enabled. They claim that only the Black X360 rrp 239.99 is HDMI enabled .

I was actually going to pick up the Arcade model up today if it had upscaling abilites, but I had to leave due to a health problem and couldn't hang around.
To be honest I couldn't really take in to much of what the sales guy was saying as the pain in my leg was increasing by the minute , but I definetly got from him that the entry level Arcade does not have an HDMI port.
I wanted Component connection , as i've only 1 HDMI port on my gaming TV and my PS3 uses that.
I was asking could I still get the Red Green and Blue Component lead and socket for HD gaming as I dont wanna keep changing leads round or have to put the 360 downstais, and he told me thats the only HD lead it uses but you have to buy it seperate as it only comes with a composite scart.
I really had to leave, but on checking GAME's Online store it confirmed that at least 3 of the models are not HDMI compatible .
It would seem the shop's arent fully aware of what each console variant is capacity off yet , though they generally agree that the 2 newest models with the large 100 GB plus hardrives are the only HDMI enabled 360's that they're aware off.

Any one wanting to check the model they plan on buying would be wise to just Google GAME, then click X360 on GAME's Homepage , then Consoles,. You will get a full description of what each console in the 360 range is capibal of, letting you pick which model suits your needs best.

I hope you dont see this as a pop at you Trench as its not.
I would never dream of showing yo disrespect in any way.
Im buying the basic 360 as a second console to my PS3 and wanted to double check it still could use Component leads for Hi Def as my smaller games tv only has 1 HDMI socket, were as my bigger family tv has 2, but thats no good to me as its downstairs. If they were HDMI only then I would have to get a multi socket adopter and they're about 40 odd quid, so that woulda took up all my discount from were I was buying from.
So , as you can see Trench, no pop ment mate.
