Just picked up John Carpenter's Prince Of Darkness for only £1.25 at my local preowned DVD shop. Haven't seen it yet but heard good things. I know it's split people down the middle as it's been slated a lot too but I thought for that price I can't go wrong really. Checked on Amazon and the cheapest preowned price is around £9. A bargain and a half!

Sargento 12th March 2011 04:00 PM

That is a bargain Ant! Been looking for it for ages .. didn't know it was available outside the Carpenter box set! It isn't great, but does have great atmosphere. Good production and acting too. I'll take it off your hands if ya don't like it Ant.

;)

Hey that's up there with Carpenter's best films if you ask me... A film which truly deserves the ARROW treatment. Great bargain Ant!

Love Prince Of Darkness. The Fog and POD are imo, Carpenter's scariest films.

I just won this HKL dvd of Game Of Death on ebay. :)

Sargento 12th March 2011 06:10 PM

Oooh I have just won The Gate R1 (Montrous Edition) on ebay too.

Nosferatu@Cult Labs 12th March 2011 07:05 PM

Thanks for the feedback -- I'll hold off buying it until I see it first.

oaxaca 13th March 2011 10:26 AM

Just bought this (thought about getting the ABUS MANIAC tin for £30 on amazon.com (to complete my collection) but decided to opt for the BD for half the price :p)...

wise choice
no tin but at lest you get the film in HD!

Nosferatu@Cult Labs 13th March 2011 11:27 AM

I haven't been through any of the extra features on my copy yet, but was distinctly underwhelmed by the picture quality which had low contrast levels, some heavy grain and pretty poor definition. I haven't seen it on DVD so don't know whether it's an improvement or about the same as the SD picture.

reviews say it does look better then the DVD from BU.
:)
Its not the best image and is far worse then BU's NYR blu but I think its more of a source issue then anything else. Grain is good however.

Just watched Heavy Metal and really enjoyed it (last time I watched it was ages ago...). :)
Strange that there's no sign of a UK bd yet,as it's announced in Belgium/France for April...

Yeah thats what I thought in the end. That tin looks lovely, but its getting on for 10 years old now and its best to look to the (HD) future I guess.

Finished off my weekend spending spree with these slashers:-

Nice.

I can't seem to find any real info on that G.O.D dvd I got. I know it was a limited edition sleeve.

I also just won another HKL dvd on ebay for £3.70, Police Assassins, with Michele Yeoh and Cynthia Rothrock.

pedromonkey 13th March 2011 08:55 PM

how many bids was that because i almost bid on it.

Stephen@Cult Labs 13th March 2011 08:58 PM

Just the 2, and I was the second.

I saw the 2-disc dvd of The Fog today for £1.99 in That's Entertainment and, for some stupid reason, didn't bother getting it. Gonna have a look on eBay now.

kingofwitches666 14th March 2011 01:05 AM

All 1p each but with 1.27 P+P came to £6.35

Nosferatu@Cult Labs 14th March 2011 07:31 AM

Excellent haul, kingofwitches666 -- there are some terrific titles there which were a steal for just 50p!

oaxaca 14th March 2011 08:09 AM

Well done Pedro and King! Great bargains!!

Nosferatu@Cult Labs 14th March 2011 11:54 AM

The postman came earlier today and brought 15 Storys High: Series 1 and 2 and Psychoville, which I bought from Play.com last Tuesday for £5 each. I've seen both of them before and they are both brilliantly funny and innovative comedy series.

I enjoyed Psychoville - whilst it's nowhere near The League of Gentlemen, it's still a good watch. I hear they're supposed to be making a second series, too.

I enjoyed it too but wasn't too bothered about picking up the Blu-ray set, especially as the whole thing on DVD was just five quid! A second series would be an interesting watch as I'd love to see what the focus of that one would be. I had a look at a couple of episodes from the first series of The League of Gentlemen last week and had forgotten just how brilliantly subversive, dark and funny it is.

AndyFrantic 14th March 2011 06:45 PM

No I'd say to start with the newer interpretation of the book, then watch the older version. Will be interesting to see an unbiased opinion.

I am not biased against remakes at all.
I am proud to say I think Hills Have Eyes remake is lots better then original.
I also enjoyed DoTD remake.

LTROI is a classic of modern times its that simple. The remake lacks the atmosphere from LTROI and misses the whole she used to be a boy story.

Well despite filing a missing item report two weeks ago about my Spaghetti Western Collection, Play still haven't responded so I think a phone call is in the offing later!

Vampix 15th March 2011 02:42 AM

Haven't had much money for DVDs lately but I needed my DVD fix, so picked up the MGM R1 of Jeff Lieberman's Squirm (1976) for £2.15 delivered. :)
