Hooray?

Nope:

What a cock up! Once we had widescreen panned and scanned into 4:3, which was infuriating. Then letterboxed VHS and DVD came along and things looked good.

But now I see increasing releases cropped to fit 16:9 televisions! This is just panning & scanning all over again. Losing picture from top and bottom is no more acceptable than losing it from the sides.

I am furious about this. It's a step back and a disaster for film lovers.

EDIT: Now, in this particular case, because of John Carpenter & Donald Morgan's framing, it doesn't look too bad. I have seen many far more compromised 1.66:1 to 1.78:1 crops. But the fact remains that Elvis was intended for 4:3 TV broadcast back in 1979, and every missing shoe and sliced off hairstyle and hat reminds you of this.

I had to double check I didn't post this - just the kind of mix batch of films that I'd buy!

A classic film Pete, really hope you enjoy it. Beats Suspiria hands down with its use of colour.

I was sure you would have this (or at least sold it on) already.

Nope, never even seen it! It's one of those films I've been meaning to pick up ages but never got around to it.

Looking forward to 'MASQUE'. Shouldn't really admit this but I've hardly seen any of the Corman/Price films.
