It's a great Western, both technically and as entertainment. It's also the film which, as legend has it, cinematographer Gregg Toland made Orson Wells go away and watch when he arrived on the set of Citizen Kane knowing nothing about filmmaking. Welles apparently watched it over 40 times in preparation for directing his first feature film, learning everything there was to know about film from Stagecoach and John Ford. He then rewrote the rules of cinema.
