It still astounds me the percentage of DVDs sold compared to the other formats. 4k has overtaken Blu-ray now as well, so Blu-ray sells the smallest amount.

But my point is why would it have been permissable to release that scene in 1989 but not 2024? I have the Special Edition 2 disc DVD set that came out in 2003(?) but I've never actually watched it through as it was released in 16.9 letterbox. Black bars top and bottom and both sides. I have to zoom it in to watch it and it makes for awful pic quality. I can't be bothered with it.

I can't believe that.

Amazon sales for example for the last month-

Wicked - 4k on dvd, 1k on Blu and 400 on 4k

Conclave - 4k on dvd, 1k on Blu and 100 on 4k

Gladiator II - 2K on dvd, 1k on Blu and 700 on 4k

Venom the Last Dance - 1k on dvd, 800 on blu and 200 on 4k

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice - 600 on dvd, 500 on Blu and 50 on 4k

Nosferatu - 400 on dvd, 500 on Blu and 200 on 4k

Not one title has sold more on 4k then Blu, but like you say dvd still sells the most.

I saw a pie chart on Reddit, it might have been based on American sales.

As much as I love the 4K Ultra HD format and consider it to the be best available way of experiencing a film with appropriate AV quality, I generally wait until the releases are in an offer (2 for 30, 3 for 30 etc), and buying them when they are brand-new and full price is rare for me.

If they were 5 or 10 quid cheaper, I'd buy more of them on release date.

I recently read someone saying that the 4K UHD format is roughly 10 per cent of the high definition physical media sales, meaning 1080p discs sell around ten times as much. No idea where he got those statistics though, could be utter nonsense.

Given the choice of buying and / or watching something on DVD or Blu-Ray, I still go for the DVD option

I think that all of the DVD / Blu-Ray combo purchases I own have got one disc that has never been removed from the case !

A couple of things waiting for me when I got back.

The to-watch pile has gotten out of hand again so will not be buying anything else for a while.

Couple of, 8 pounds each, blu-ray upgrades from HMV. I'll confess now, I only like several Star Trek films - Wrath of Khan, Voyage Home, Undiscovered Country, First Contact and the modern Kelvin trilogy. The ones that I do like, I very much enjoy.

Thought about also upgrading Wrath of Khan but when I took a fresh look at it, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the original Paramount bd actually looks very good, there's nothing wrong with it. My original blu-ray copy of First Contact is nothing amazing but fairly solid, I don't really mind it.

Having had a look, whilst both of these new discs look excellent, out of the two, the biggest upgrade is The Undiscovered country. I'm not exaggerating when I say that my prior first batch bd copy was one of the worst hd discs I've ever bought.

It looks incredible now, people actually resemble people rather than looking like they're made out of plasticine. Can't wait to properly watch these two blu-ray upgrades.
