I was asked my top ten as a feature (that was never printed) for a local magazine in the early 90s (it asked a number of local film critics, one film per director I think it was). My Top Ten then was...I think I can remember it but may have the order a bit mixed up here and there... 1. Once Upon A Time In The West 2. The Night Of The Hunter 3. Apocalypse Now 4. Bad Lieutenant 5. Down To The Cellar 6. Suspiria 7. The Wicker Man 8. Videodrome 9. Bad Luck Blackie 10. ...I can't remember what the last one was! I reckon it would be slightly different now...if still one per director (or it would just be a list of Sergio Leone films) then for this 24 hours it would be something like: 1. Once Upon A Time In The West 2. The Night Of The Hunter 3. Apocalypse Now 4. The Wicker Man 5. Peeping Tom 6. Down To The Cellar 7. Suspiria 8. Bad Luck Blackie 9. The Big Combo 10. The Scarlet Empress There would follow a close tussle between Videodrome, Dirty Harry, Bad Lieutenant, High Plains Drifter, Godzilla and several others. The top three will be the same tomorrow, the rest are subject to much, much change! |

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas 9. Rumblefish 10. Requiem for a Dream subject to heavy change and discussion/argument with myself.. |

Last time I tried to do this I ended up with like 46 films I couldn't exclude. So this is not in any way definitive. Suspiria (1977) Phantom of the Paradise (1974) Brazil (1985) Mulholland Dr. (2001) Network (1976) The Thing (1982) Love and Death (1975) Evil Dead (1981) Videodrome (1983) Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) I hate doing this. I've got a lot of love for the 70s considering I wasn't even nearly alive. Honourable mention to Rocky Horror and Night of the Living Dead. |
