It's probably the same with Guillermo del Toro and those who love his 'personal' films (Cronos, The Devil's Backbone, Pan's Labyrinth, Crimson Peak) but don't have as much time for the more mainstream films he makes, which are conversely more appealing to those who don't like the Spanish-language and ghost stories.

That's probably the case, for whatever reason (ecological, biological, governmental) – any one of three would suffice), so Children of Men easily fits and was in my preliminary list before I cut it down.

Chronos was alright but not amazing, bored me at times. The Hellboy films were a lot of fun but again wouldn't say they were amazing or stand out, although the first was pretty damn unique at the time. Pacific Rim was the biggest disappointment, and Crimson Peak favoured style over substance so much it felt like a Tim Burton movie and ultimately brought it down. This leaves Pans Labryinth, which I agree is amazing, but not for the reasons everyone says. It's advertised and always brought up because of it's fantasy elements, but they're hardly there and I thought they got in the way of what was ultimately a very powerful story of human beings in the Spanish Civil War, and if he made it straight without the OTT fantasy elements would have been even better.

I really like it, Fuzzy. The whole Egyptian God theme fascinates me.

I'll have to give it a watch, it was when I hit the Egyptian part of the plot synopsis I thought "Whoa ok". Ancient Egypt has always fascinated me, helps that it heavily dominates the cover art of one of my favorite albums...

A dystopia (from the Greek δυσ- and τόπος, alternatively, cacotopia, kakotopia, or simply anti-utopia) is a community or society that is undesirable or frightening. I would argue Blade Runner falls under this. Its a broad subject and probably fits a lot of Sci-Fi as most could fit in this area. |
