Yes, I know it's a raven but still... Whilst I agree that a lot of the music doesn't really fit the tone of the film at times - ditto Phenomena (although I guess in a lot of ways it does suit with Demons being a bit of a mish-mash of a film anyway) - I think it's a great soundtrack in its own right and the Simonetti stuff is some of his best work... although you can rarely go wrong with Simonetti. I'm forcing myself to only choose one Goblin/Simonetti score for my Top 10 Scores in the interests of variety - an extremely tough call! |

If you can get a zoverstocks special I can recommend it, the songs are all exclusive to the film!

I agree, I love his work, especially Goblin's Dawn soundtrack (which I'll be seeing performed live in Manchester next month), but his score for Dario Argento's amazing* Dracula 3D is almost as bad as the film itself! *Internet forum sarcasm

I really like the soundtrack to Phenomena but as soon as it veers into metal territory i lose it. same with Opera etc. Thought u'd dig that stuff being a metal head Dem.

The songs aren't too bad in both films, it's their placement, they just don't work well at all. I'm sure Dem agrees with me here

Scores: 1. Suspiria (1977) - Goblin My self-imposed single Goblin/Simonetti choice... but what a choice. Audio perfection. 2. Nekromantik / Der Todesking "Nekronology" - Hermann Kopp Jaunty yet powerful score which is perfect for the loving of the dead. 3. Assault on Precinct 13 (1976) - John Carpenter Such a simple, yet beautifully effective score from Carpenter. It was a toss up between this and Halloween, and call me a heretic if you like but this won out. 4. Cannibal Holocaust (1980) - Riz Ortolani One of the best things about these cannibal films were their soundtracks. Along with Lenzi's Cannibal Ferox, Holocaust has one of the stand-out scores within the sub-genre. 5. Lucifer Rising (1972) - Bobby Beausoleil Fantastically dark, experimental score compliments a fantastic experimental film. 6. Thief (1981) - Tangerine Dream A great score - makes for some great driving music too. 7. The Visitor (1979) - Franco Micalizzi Bonkers but brilliant score for a bonkers film. 8. Phase IV (1974) - Brian Gascoigne The perfect music to accompany ants. 9. Hanna (2011) - The Chemical Brothers One of my favourite modern scores. I love what the guys did with this and it's an occasion where the score elevated the status of the film for me... it's a decent little film too though. 10. Maniac (1980) - Jay Chattaway Grime-synth heaven. Extremely difficult to choose just 10 scores, and ask me again tomorrow and my list will have no doubt of changed. |

For me, and it hurts to say this, classic metal just doesn't go with film. I can't think of one instance except maybe Trick or Treat but that's about a rock star so doesn't count. Something playing on the car stereo is different in say Friday the 13th part 6 (Teenage Frankenstein) that works well as it's part of the film, but just cranking Iron Maiden up every time the killer appears in Phenomena is just bollocks. |

A couple that just missed the cut: Liquid Sky (1982) - Slava Tsukerman Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010) - Sionia Caves I was being harsh and really wanted to stick with a top 10 instead of veering off into Top 20/30/40/50... territory. |

I didn't realize Tangerine Dream scored Thief. I just bought that. Doubt i'll ever watch it now. |
