That whole area - Minnesota, North, South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, Montana, feature in a hell of a lot of westerns which all show the states as incredibly hot in summer and cold as ice in winter.

The Rockies, which don't go into Minnesota but run alongside are an example of the extreme temperature changes.

From everything I read yesterday, I think Minnesota is slightly different because it is so far north and so far inland. As such, in winter, it has the icy winds from Canada coming down bringing Arctic weather, but not the (relative) warmth from the Great Lakes, which somewhat mitigate the effect for states like Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

I thought Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming Montana were all further south down towards Arizona. Like I said shows what I know. I've never paid massive attention to where Westerns are actually set as it's never seemed terribly relevant. The size of America is nuts though. About ten years back we stayed in New York. We had a few nights in Manhattan then travelled into upstate New York for a few days to do some touring around. We had this clever idea to see Washington DC. Which on our map was about two centimetres.
5 hrs later we arrived Was something like a 850 mile round trip.

It's on the edge of Lake Superior.

Besides you don't watch the westerns (to my knowledge) that are were filmed in these states - Montana, Wyoming, Minnesota etc.

I stand corrected. The central states of the US have massive temperature fluctuations because they are thousands of miles from the sea, being very cold during the winter and very warm in the summer. The deserts are little like those in Africa (and other continents) with hot days and cold nights, leading to cracking rocks, hence the famous and impressive formations in Monument Valley, which is southerly but, being near the western border of Arizona, inland and also, I believe, thousands of feet above sea level.
