There's some right nonsense in there. Chato's Land, Hannie Caulder and Eagles Wing for a start are British films.
The first euro western was British I belive. I think it was Hammer studios.

As for John ford. I'm with John Carpenter on him. some of his stuff was decent but Howard Hawks was better.
I think Ford captured the ideal of the American west with his cinematography. However directors like Hawkes, Sturges and Budd Boetticher also made quality films. Don't get me wrong though, Ford made some classics and really kick started the whole western genre with films like Stagecoach and My Darling Clementine.

Do you mean Savage Guns? It was made by Michael Carreras shortly after he left Hammer and directed by Jimmy Sangster.

I was only reading a bit of the Hammer Story book last night. It was what made me decide on Westerns as the topic.

It's probably been over a decade since I saw it, but I thought it was brilliant. For what it's worth, it has been selected for preservation in the United States National film Registry That by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

Also, how the hell did I miss High Noon of my list. It's a great movie which I have seen many times and really like. This calls for some reorganisation.

Okay, revised list, now including McCabe & Mrs. Miller, which I guarantee will be there once I have watched it, and High Noon, which I somehow forgot about.
  • Once Upon a Time in the West
  • The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
  • Rio Bravo
  • Stagecoach
  • The Searchers
  • Unforgiven
  • No Country for Old Men
  • The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
  • McCabe & Mrs. Miller
  • For a Few Dollars More
  • The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
  • Brokeback Mountain
  • Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
  • High Plains Drifter
  • Dances with Wolves
  • My Darling Clementine
  • The Wild Bunch
  • The Outlaw Josey Wales
  • High Noon
  • The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada

Sadly missing out: A Fistful of Dollars, Shane, Rango, Giant, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, Django, A Bullet for the General, Keoma, True Grit (both versions), 3:10 to Yuma (both versions) and Rooster Cockburn.

I rarely disagree with their opinions and reviews, so it doesn't appear that if I've wasted my money.

No it isn't!
Maybe it's a matter of expectations. I found Salvation on Now Tv and stuck it on one night not expecting much and it really surprised me. It's clearly a low budget job but well worth a go and it's easily the best thing I've seen Mads Mickelson do. Not sure id recommend you spending too much on it though Dem. As for The Searchers, the bloody Meanderers more like. I sat down to that film with such expectations and the first twenty mins or so it actually delivers, then it just descends into quaint silliness with John Wayne appearing to send himself up in a performance I liken to Arnies turn in Last Action Hero.

Probably best to agree to disagree on The Searchers.

There are quite a few modern takes on the western i'd like to see.

Forsaken
Meeks Cutoff
The Magnificent Seven
Slow West
The Salvation
The Homesman
The Virginian
True Women
Tracker

I could have sworn you reviewed the new Magnificent Seven remake yourself only a week or two ago?
