Great to see Venom in the top 10 though. |

Final thought. Starry Eyes has kind of stuck with me since seeing it and The Neon Demon seemed to cover the exact same ground but not as well executed.

A lot of people made the same complaint against Only God Forgives. I definitely thought it had a story, although not exactly linear at times. You're speaking to a fan of Bergman, Fellini, Jodorowsky, Lynch, Miike, Von Trier and Zuławski (amongst others) though so 'story' at least in the conventional sense isn't always necessarily important to the thoughts and feelings that a film can conjure up inside you!

There are certainly some comparisons to be drawn between the two films on certain levels. Starry Eyes was very good, but for me a little 'rough and ready' and a little crude in how it handled its material. The Neon Demon for me was the more polished of the two (which isn't necessarily a good or a bad thing); I just connected with it much more than Starry Eyes.

I'm tempted to say you connected with it more due to it's arty fartiness. But i won't. |

You could very well be right though. Films of that ilk just tend to connect with me more, and I make no secret of that! |

So, now with the first quarter of 2017 already behind us, I have watched 137 films so far this year. Of those 137, 101 have been first time watches. Whilst still little early on in the year, below are my updated top 10 new to me films thus far (new entries are in red). 1. The Neon Demon (2016) 2. Mommy (2014) 3. Red White & Blue (2010) 4. Nightmare (1964) 5. Culloden (1964) 6. High Rise (2015) 7. Tale of Tales (2015) 8. The Last Detail (1973) 9. 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) 10. Bone Tomahawk (2015) Full list here. Quite a lot of changes since my last update, especially within the Top 10, which sees four new entries, from the hard hitting drama Mommy, Hammer thriller Nightmare (which was long overdue a watch from me), the fantastical and sumptuous Tale of Tales and the biting, dry-witted, and well-acted The Last Detail.
