Simon Ward and Hayley Mills star in this downbeat, sour, very British flick that needs more love imho. Finding Mills in some distress, Ward offers some assistance. If only a recent escapee from a asylum wasn't in the area .....
The print that I have is reasonable, even if projector damage is clearly obvious in places.

Seen it the one time from a mate's gray market dvd which will probably be the same print you saw (Surprisingly decent) and have always steered clear of it since in the hope someone will release it officially.

If there are no HD standard materials available there's no reason the BFI can't do what they did with The Appointment and release it upscaled.

Or even...Shock! Horror! only on dvd.

Carry On Cabby (1963, Gerald Thomas)

Battle of the sexes with the usual gang.
When his frustrated partner takes revenge in a novel way, Charlie Hawkins (Sid) finds that all is not fair in this war of attrition.
Gentle as a lamb now, the "smut" is relegated to some risque dialogue and the odd flash of thigh. Hawtrey excels as a clumsy oaf. The finale epitomises "tacked on" but is fun for all that.

Carry On Cruising (1962, Gerald Thomas)

The first colour outing for the gang. It sort of suits the situation, what with all the locations (cough)
Anyway, our lovable grump James is the captain, who likes to run a tight ship. When he is lumbered with five new crew members, he tells them in no uncertain terms what he thinks of them. For my money, this is the twee-est of all the COs, even if we get to see Liz Fraser in her underwear ahem. Ken looks a tad chubby here, I must dig out the Diaries again to see how much he hated this one , though he gives it his all as always.

If I say this was almost a UK Bad Lieutenant, I wouldn't be wrong.
Meet the lads, diamond geezers all. Whether they're turning over your drum or not, you wouldn't turn your back on them if you know what's good for you. Neil Maskell pops up to shout the c word and that.
I did enjoy this seedy, sordid wee thing, and wish that I had seen it at the time ahem.

Another revisit. Hawtrey embodies camp as a locum officer sent in to bolster the ranks after a flu epidemic depletes the workforce, with Ken W at his poshest, Ken C at his jitteryist (?) and Leslie P as the archetypal smoothie. Sid shouts a lot
Can I revise my opinion and say this is the gentlest CO cough cough. Barely a whiff of sordidness here, just a case of fishes out of water finding their feet etc.
