Don't understand the love for 'Ms. Brown's Boys' either. That made me laugh even less than 'OFAH' did!!

All the people who are stating how unfunny and poor Abbott and Costello are, have fallen into a huge trap - that of looking at them through 2018 eyes instead of looking at them in a historical context. During the 1940's and 50's, their work on radio film and television made them the most popular comedy team in America, if not the world. They were the highest paid entertainers during WW2

In 1942, Warner Bros.'s Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies cartoon unit produced a number of animated features depicting the duo as cats, named 'Babbit and Catstello.' One of these cartoons, 'A Tale of Two Kitties,' is famous for introducing the character of Tweety Bird to the world

Their routine 'Who's On First' was named as the routine 'best comedy sketch of the 20th Century' by Time Magazine in 1999

and has been parodied numerous times, including (but not limited to) Johnny Carlson, The Animaniacs, The Simpsons and Family Guy. It seems that even Alexa knows the routine

Bud and Lou may not be as popular as Stan and Ollie, or Chaplin, Keaton, Lewis etc, but no one can really take away their place in comedy history

Who's on first

I thought it was dead parrot sketch or two Ronnie's four candles that where voted best comedy sketch of 20th century
Mrs Brown boys I do get and see why its not everyone cup of tea and why people don't like it and I don't think it's that great just enjoyable nonsense .
And a lot of people think Only fools and horses is voted best British comedy of all time it isn't its Fawlty towers , I think a lot of the appeal with only fools and horses is it just plain simple humour that doesn't rely on swearing crude rude smutt (yes a little here and there eg the blow up dolls ) that most comedies ( like or dislike ) rely on these days.
Define comedy everyone sense of humour is different, me personally apart from games night I barely raised a chuckle at any comedy film over last 10yrs or so
Its the same with comedians most comedians I don't find funny and a lot of people don't like Peter Kay either, me I prefer Kevin bridges these days
I think the punchline in this about government getting people back to work and working in Poundland had me in stitches

Four Candles - Wikipedia:

  • It was placed fifth on Channel 4's list of the fifty greatest comedy sketches of all time
  • It was ranked sixth most memorable television event in a survey of 2,000 viewers on behalf of digital TV service Freeview

Best Comedy Routine
"Who's on First?"
by Abbott and Costello (1938)
It's such a simple premise, and Abbott and Costello drive it about 20 ft. into the ground, but "Who's on First?" is not only the century's most famous comedy bit; it's also the best. It's absurdism mixed with the easy pleasure of confusion, and Bud Abbott plays the perfect cool logician to Lou Costello's frustrated inquisitor in this Beckettian farce.

RUNNERS-UP "Dead Parrot," Monty Python; "Rope Tricks," Will Rogers

Seven Blood Stained Orchids (1972).

Giallo about a black gloved maniac, aren't they always , on a killing spree and leaving a silver half moon amulet with each victim.

When a woman is attacked on a train, played by Uschi Glas, the killer doesn't count on her surviving her ordeal. And she alone may hold the clue to the series of murders.

Though not as accomplished as Argento's or Fulci's gialli, this is still a stylish, solid and entertaining film. Although, maybe a little slow and pedestrian at times.
And eventhough there's not an awful lot of violence in this one, there does feature a rather nasty death by power drill.

Also co-starring the delectable Marisa Mell, who looks as attractive as always.

Directed by Umberto Lenzi. And proof that he was capable of a lot more than just Cannibal films. 7/10.

Happy Death Day

Lots of fun with this Groundhog Day inspired slasher, a student sleeps with a lot of people & spends most of the movie wondering why anyone would want to kill her.....and reliving the day of the murder until she finds said killer.

It matches Groundhog day note for note (she's confused, then she hates it, then she has fun), but it's not quite as memorable.
Blumhouse pictures is a genre staple all it's own, almost original, very good but not groundbreaking horror like this & Get Out, it's good to see someone trying hard with mainstream horror, if only to feed it to tweens.

A good 6/10

In The Eye of The Hurricane (1971).

More of a mystery thriller than a giallo, with a bit of eroticism thrown in as well.

Analia Gadé plays Ruth, a rich woman who leaves her husband Michel, for Paul, played by Jean Sorel.
When they go to her sunny villa in the Cote d' Azur, a series of mysterious accidents start to happen to her, brakes failing on the car, faulty oxygen tank whilst scuba diving. At first, she thinks it's her husband trying to kill her boyfriend, but it becomes apparent that there's more to it than that.

Very little violence in this film. But still worth a watch for the cinematography and great locations. Anna Gadé may not be an Edwige Fenech, but she's nice on the eye and gives a good performance.

Nice transfer as well from 88 Films. 7/10.

Hope and Glory 1987.

Schoolboy Bill Rohan sees first hand growing up in London at the announcement of WWII, and the blitz that occurred along with his two sisters and mother while his dad signs up.

This is a semi autobiography based on events that director John Boorman experienced and brings his childhood to the screen.

There is great acting from Sarah Miles as the mother who does her best to keep things together and Sammi Davis as the older rebellious daughter who tries to keep going with her teen years. Ian Bannen stars as the cheerful grumpy grandad. The film does have its dramatic and thrilling moments along with some comedy moments but definitely one to watch. 8 out of 10.

Halloween. With the new Halloween due out later this year, touted as a direct sequel to the original (and ignoring all the other sequels!) it seemed an apposite time to revisit the original as babysitting duties for teenager Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) turn into a terrifying battle for survival when escaped madman Michael Myers decides to come home for Halloween... Still a classic after all these years, Halloween has lost none of its power to scare and seems, much like 1974's Black Christmas, both very 70s and yet oddly timeless at the same time.

Suburban Sasquatch
An aspiring journalist is tipped about a strange death, he discovers that the police are covering up more murders committed by a sasquatch. He then teams up with a native American woman to kill it.
Blame redlettermedia for this discovery. The gore effects, acting and pretty much everything about the film is shit. But it is endearing to sit and watch it all fall apart. The sasquatch looks and sounds great.

Watch Me When i Kill (1977).

Finally got around to watching this one after buying it several months ago.

A cabaret dancer becomes the target for a murderer after she unwittingly becomes the witness to the murder of a doctor at a pharmacy.
Several more murders occur, including a woman whose head is put in an oven.

The dancer's boyfriend later discovers that all the victims served on a jury together, and the man they convicted has escaped from jail. But is he the killer?

Directed by Antonio Bido, who made the enjoyable Bloodstained Shadow. This is a well made and suspenseful giallo. The only thing lacking is the sleaze factor. So don't expect any Edwige Fenech lookalikes undressing. 7/10.

Nosferatu@Cult Labs 24th June 2018 02:46 PM

I watched the most recent additions to the 88 Asia Collection this week, along with commentaries, and they show the diversity of the Shaw Brothers' output.

Black Magic Part II is a completely barmy zombie (I use the word advisedly) film because it is similar to a film like White Zombie or Plague of the Zombies in that the antagonist is using black magic to create a brain-dead horde of follows, in this case an army. It's a film with so much innovative framing, great colours, and interesting sets that it's a visual treat. This doesn't detract from the very strange plot and the events which take place (not many films feature adult males being asked to eat eyeballs or drinking human breast milk from source!), but enhance the weirdness and make it a great deal of fun.

The Spiritual Boxer is like a precursor to the Jackie Chan martial arts comedies because it follows someone who has been trained in the five elements of martial arts and can use the various techniques (crane, tiger, snake, panther and dragon) of kung fu but chooses to use his skills for mischief rather than good. There are some good comedic sequences and a romantic subplot before you get to the showdown between the hero and the guys who were introduced at the outset demonstrating their kung fu prowess. This has a Karate Kid-like relationship between the master and apprentice, also like that seen between Wong Fei-hung and Beggar So in Drunken Master (only without any drunken boxing!) but probably isn't as well developed and meaningful. Even so, it's a lot of fun and one I recommend to all kung fu fans.

I watched both of these with the English track and then the commentaries, which are by different people and they are very well researched – it's a shame that The Spiritual Boxer one has a lot of background hiss, but otherwise is a great addition to the disc. I intend to watch both with the Chinese (presumably Mandarin) tracks in the next couple of days.

The Diabolical (2015)

I won't go too much into the plot of this supernatural horror film other than saying it's about a mother and her two children who are so affected by ghostly activity they are unable to leave their home. Although there's a lot more to it than that.

I really enjoyed The Diabolical. It was certainly different from the usual paranormal type films. The ghostly spectres are quite horrific looking more akin to Hellraiser than anything, their appearances came across as quite frightening and rather gory. Ali Larter, who is no stranger to genre films, plays the mother and holds the film together well, the two child actors are also very good. Add this to a story which defies the usual genre conventions and i found myself watching a nicely refreshing and satisfying supernatural thriller.

XTRO - I never got around to renting this out during the 80s despite picking up the box countless times, I missed out on a real gem, well better late then never. I’m not sure where to start, it’s probably one of the most bizarre films I’ve ever seen. Everything is thrown at the wall and it all sticks. Imagine if Alan Clarke took a shed load of acid and decided to make a schlocky horror film, you’d then be somewhere in the vicinity. I watched the entire thing with a look of joyous disbelief. Loved it.

The poseidon Adventure 1972

On route to Greece fron New York, a cruise liner S.S. Poseidon is hit by a tidal wave and is flipped over. A band of survivors group together in attempt to survive.

This is a classic 70s disaster that started off the disaster movie genre of the decade, with a good star cast. Gene Hackman plays plays the fanatical preachervwho he believes he is saving people. Ernist Borgnine plays a ex cop who clashes with the preacher numerous times. Jack Albertson and Shelley Winters play a married couple on their way to visit family. Roddy McDowell plays a ships hand and a small appearsnce by Leslie Nielsen as the captain.

Aside from the cast there is some good special effects and alot of tension that builds up with alot of claustrophic feeling with a bit of unintentional comedy humour, with plenty of twist and turns. 8 out of 10.

Suspiria. Susy bannyon arrives in freeburg in germany to attend the tan dance academy. when she gets there she sees a woman called Pat shouting at someone inside the school. then Pat runs away in the woods and when she gets home a madman kills her and hangs her, and her friend dies as well when the roof falls on her. after that susy finds out that the school is run by covens of witches who put spells on her. anyone who crosses the witches gets killed, like Daniel who is blind and gets eaten by his dog when the dog gets possessed. her best friend is then murdered to and gets trapped in room with barb wires after falling in it through a windw and trying to escape from a maniac with a razor. but as she is trapped in the wires the maniac cuts her throat and she dies as well. and for Susy her only ally now is Udo kieer who is a doctor.

Went to the cinema to see Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. I was somewhat underwhelmed by Jurassic World, and this latest in the franchise has come in for very harsh reviews, though I'm not entirely sure why. It's a big dumb fun popcorn movie that delivers what it says on the tin, and I think I preferred it to its predecessor to be honest; I enjoyed the switch in location in the second half, along with its corresponding claustrophobic horror movie feel. Overall nothing special but perfectly watchable and enjoyable.

Butcher Baker Nightmare Maker (1982).

Superb 80's slasher film starring Susan Tyrrell in one of her most unforgettable performances.

After his parents are killed in a horrific accident, Billy goes to live with his Aunt Cheryl. Forward 14 years and Billy is at high school with a girlfriend and star of the basketball team. With hopes of a scholarship, Cheryl takes drastic measures to stop him from leaving her, even if she has to turn to murder.

I've watched this a few times, and it's always a lot of fun. And it's a really strong psychological horror film as well.
To say Susan Tyrrell is over the top in this film is an understatement.

One of the most unique films i own in my collection.

Big Bo Svenson also co-stars as a bigoted cop, who's also pretty unhinged himself.

Very highly recommended. And the Code Red blu-ray looks terrific.
8/10.

The Horror at 37,000 Feet 1973

On a flight from London to America, a architect and his wife transport a alter from an old abby unaware its possessed by a demon. Soon the passengers start battling with good against evil.

This is on of those made for TV movies that's starred William Shatner as a drunk ex priest and Chuck Connor as the pilot.

The film does start off fairly decent and the pace goes smoothly then all hell breaks loose. The film must have been on a budget as the demon is never seen but appears as a cold ice smoke which is something different, I think the scary part is watching Shatner's over acting skills in a horror, to the point of begging him to be killed quickly or Scotty beaming him into oblivion. 5 out of 10
