Not seen The Jacket.
There is no going forward in time though.
Its a basic Thriller that lacks substance

Default Fantasy FilmFest 2011

Took the train to Hamburg yesterday to spend a day at Fantasy FIlmFest 2011. Managed to see five films.

First up was Inn Keepers a pretty enjoyable slacker haunted hotel story featuring a well written and acted central relationship between the two main characters. Unfortunately overall despite the strong central relationship the overall plot never really develops in a satisfactory manner. Worth a watch at FirghtFest, but I will skip it for one of the discovery screenings.

Followed this with A Horrible Way to Die which I watched previously at FantisticFest last year (in the company of writer, director and main actors). THis is an excellent film, well acted and paced with a fantastic plot structure which turns the whole story on its hed at the end. This also plays FrightFest next weekend and is in my opinion a must see.

Next was Julia X 3d. This played along with the trailer for Sex and Zen 3D, which wasn't quite the 3D experience I had hoped for . Back to the film. Its surprising, but it seems torture porn has been around sufficiently long that its now time for "ironic" torture porn comedies. Got to say that I am not a fan of the whole torture porn genre, but this was an enjoyable if instantly forgetaable 90 minutes. Let down a little by some very dodgy prosthetic effects.

Next my film of the day, Kill Shot. This was a fantastic hitman film in the kitchen miserablis style of Ken Loach et al with a WTF mind**** ending. Another must see for next weekends FrightFest.

Final film was Urabn Explorer a German horror with international cast set in the extensive tunnel network under Berlin. Thankfully this took a bt of a left turn about 30 minutes in and didn't become quite the film I expected and dreaded. Overall well worth a watch when it hits the UK or DVD/Bluray. The German director was present for an intro and Q&A. The intro was ultra short and I skipped the Q&A a I had to get the train home.

I was impressed with the line-up for Fantasy FilmFest (except for the German language screenings all of the films are either English, English with German subs or original language with English subs) there is quite an overlap with FrightFest though and will certainly try to organise work a bit better next year so that I can take time off to enjoy the whole festival (which continues to run until Wednesday).

Looking forward now to FrightFest on Thursday.

Default What films have you seen recently?

MANHATTAN BABY - not one of Fulci's best and a bit of a bore
AMER - weird but not bad, close ups remind me of Fucli, colours of Argento and Bava. I know this film is a 'homage' to the giallo but no way as good as Argento et al
THE DA VINCI CODE - saw this at last, not a bad thriller, wouldn't buy it though
EYEBALL - quite a good giallo

Sounds like a fine day out SShaw, with some pretty good films on show.

Look forward to your Frightfest verdicts.

Watched "Sunshine". I thought it was........ok (don't want to reopen an old topic but it's no Event Horizon)

Also watched "Mimic". According to IMDB Guillermo del Toro disowned the film (after interferance) but it was actually a lot better than I remember. A little disjointed in places but the creatures were great and Mira Sorvino is gorgeous.

Finally I watched "The silent scream" from the Hammer house of horror set. Peter Cushing on great form an a very young Brian Cox (looking pretty much the same as he does now). Great stuff.

That's by far the film I'm most looking forward to at FrightFest. I'm only doing the saturday and sunday, but looks like I'll get to see some good stuff!

Ring of Death aka Detective Belli (1969)
Fun Italian murder mystery/whodunnit (which is often classified as a giallo) with (almost) no blood but a good portion of sleaze and lots of twists and turns.
Franco Nero plays detective Belli and he's in good form.
I enjoyed watching this stylish production again.

Btw I watched the Code Red dvd which has the US version.

Today I watched:

TERMINATOR SALVATION - Not bad, better than part 3 but not as good as the original.

BEYOND THE DARKNESS - Never liked this film but I thought I'd give it another chance by watching the BD, and I actually liked it better than I did previously, though I still don't think it's anything special.

WHO DARES WINS - Cheesy, fun - if slightly overlong. The Arrow BD is the worst I've seen.

Finally got round to watching saw the final chapter, not bad some decent traps/deaths in it.

Then followed by bonded by blood, british gangster movie based on the true events of the essex boys murder. The same event that rise of the footsoldier is based on. Both great films but I think rise of the footsoldier is the better out of the two.
