Yeah, I have the Troma disc and aside from some lower quality inserted footage, it's pretty decent - some decent extras, too. As for the film, it's a nice little homage/sequel/parody of Maniac. Nowhere near as gritty or raw as Lustig's classic, but it does come with a moderate dose of dark comedy. |

"Un Chant d'amour" Playwright, novelist and jailbird, Jean Genet made this short film in 1950 before disowning it later in his life as he was never sure if it was art or pornography. It's porn. Basically it's 25 silent minutes of men in prison cells wanking, with a bit of rape chucked in for good measure. That said, it's quite beautiful to look at and at times captures the more erotic moments of his novels with recurring images of sensual smoking and sweat running down muscular chests. Worth a look if you're interested in the history of underground film. "Pink Narcissus" Made over a 7 year period in his flat, James Bidgood's "Pink Narcissus" is an epic ode to the male form and highly stylised ultra exotic/erotic imagery. Like Genet's film this too is dialogue free but makes great use of music and sound effects. This is excellent, even more so, given it's production history which is detailed in an interview with the director on the BFI release. The best way I can describe it is to liken it to Kenneth Anger getting it on with Liberace. Here's a couple of pics of it's less outrageous moments. |

A perfect description, and one of the greatest Underground films ever made. A great soundtrack as well. Now if we could just get Thundercrack!

Salo on BR. Strange film, to say the least and leaps from being bizarre and horribly attention grabbing to a bit dull and daft all within the space of a few moments. Set design was awesome, acting very variable. It is very much a watch once film though and not really a work you'd be in a hurry to go back to! As a unique viewing experience it's highly recommended but as pure entertainment value its not much fun! BFI presentation is great. Can't see even Film on 4 putting this on TV any time soon or anybody trying for a remake.

Humongous (1982) (Scorpion Releasing R0)Slightly better than I remember & the opening is nicely atmospheric.Hampered by some weak 'kills' & acting though at least it's uncut & you can see what's going off throughout in the new dvd release. The burning model boat is slightly more convincing than the one used in Ghost Galleon which looks dire. This could have been so much better as there's a good location & more could have been made of the ravenous dogs loose on the island by making them more of a threat to the group, instead of just chow for the killer. The 'R' version of the opening rape scene is included as an extra & is cut very heavily.
