GODZILLA FINAL WARS - This movie throws in everything but the kitchen sink. Imagine most the monsters from previous Godzilla movies, throw in Minilla aka Minya, G.I.N.O. From the American movie, add some aliens, mutants , stir in some martial arts and there you have it, 2 hours of Daikaiju fun. Funnily enough apart from a brief scene at the beginning it is almost an hour before our hero makes an appearance.

It IS bleak masterpiece - such a sense of creeping dread, but its courage lies in taking on such an extraordinarily emotive theme - the aftermath of Vietnam, IN the aftermath of Vietnam, in the rawest possible terms, with only the filter of horror-fantasy providnig any buffer for what must've been desperate emotions, historically speaking. I found it way more moving than, say, 'Combat Shock', and more depressing, if that's possible.

Just seen Finchers Girl with the Dragon Tattoo! Its a great flick that is not a frame by frame remake thank goodness! Spoilers ahead! I did not like the death of Henrik in this version, prefer the Swedish one as Lisbeth made a choice which imo connects to the burning of her farther. Also did not like how she told him about all that after. Thats the only parts I did not like in the Fincher version. I preferd the last part in the Fincher version as it went into a little more detail with finding Harriet and what Lisbeth did to bring down Wagner. Overall very good movie, enjoyed it! |

Obsession Highly entertaining Hitchcock pastiche, though I saw the ending coming a mile off (that's what you get for casting John Lithgow as a seemingly nice guy ). Nice to see an original Laurent Bouzereau making of on the disc, knocking spots off the usual overlong-title-sequenced Arrow featurettes . . .

Inspired by my rewatch of 'Videodrome' yesterday, decided to take on NETWORK earlier this aft. Remains a scathing and relevant satire, the predecessor of Chris Morris, Charlie Brooker and probably all other other meeja hackers. Atmospherically, it conjures a sense of controlled hysteria - the tone of our our own blighted existence, lived out and shaped within the shadow of today's media monolith - F*CK THE OLYMPICS. Sorry, I should really just lie down and watch 'the Fly' on TV. |
