Just finished watching The Disappeared on Film4, Great British supernatural film with a surprising twist at the end, decent plot and some good acting.

INVITATION ONLY - A Taiwanese take on 'Saw' / 'Hostel' territory - the sick rich ravage a selection of cowering social aspirants in a torture warehouse. Quite enjoyed this functional but reasonably paced morsel, a slight but brutal package with a bit of stylistic ambience and more than a bit of gore. It's strange really - 15 years ago this kind of thing would've been thought of as pretty transgressive... now it's just another case on the shelf. Weird how it all works out. Anyway, yeah, it was pretty good, all the more so for making the socio-economic power aspect central - glad to say there was some restorative class justice at the end, freedom for Tooting (or Taiwanese equivalent of) etc.

We Need to Talk About Kevin - One for the 'admirable movie I never want to see again' file, alongside Wolf Creek, Martyrs and Salo. Obviously it's not the gore thats the problem here, it's the relentless bleakness of the whole film, there's not one light moment - poor Tilda Swinton makes Job look like a cosseted millionaire. As for the titular Kevin, he has all the character nuance of Michael Myers and drags the whole film into the 'evil child' horror subgenre. I loved Morven Callar and have the greatest respect for Lynne Ramsey's lack of compromise to the material but I have to say this film felt off for me and I've no plans to revisit it.

There are some films (Citizen Kane, Solaris, Tokyo Story etc) which many people will appreciate, but not enjoy, so will only watch once but other people will appreciate and enjoy. For you, maybe Martyrs and Wolf Creek fit into the first category. As for We Need to Talk About Kevin, I have the BD to review, so will hold judgement on that for the time being.

So why do you rate it four stars out of four? You think this movie is "excellent", "outstanding", "a masterpiece",... that's clear. But why? There's no need to write reams, but such a high rating definitely needs a (short) explanation! Greetings! |
