The Sinking of Japan - impressive SF disaster flick about Japan being sucked below the Pacific tectonic plate. Much better than Hollywood eco-disaster efforts, with more human warmth and genuine tension throughout. Sullied, however by THE most awful, mawkish, pop ballad which appears a couple of times during the film. Otherwise, great stuff. Shark Attack 3 - Megalodon - well, I am not sure what to say about this. It's cheap, badly acted, has extremely clunky use of stock footage (in one scene the shark changes species about three times as it approaches a boat) and has no technical skill to redeem it. But on the other hand, it's funny, the script is knowing and amusing, the story rattles along great, the characters are wonderful and by the end of the film I had thoroughly enjoyed myself and was glad I had purchased the film. So, is it bad? It raises the issue of what is bad, once again. This is inept, yes, but I can't call it bad, because I loved it and never once questioned what I as doing watching it. Excellent entertainment. |

Watched the Universal 100 BD of To Kill a Mockingbird this morning. Wow, haven't seen this movie for about 20 years and what a fantastic, powerful, lyrical piece of work it is - one of the few that can moisten these cynical old eyes. Picture is out of this world, packaging brilliant, extras look good too - in short don't let this go out of print - grab it now.

Don't get me wrong, up to ep 18 it's all good, i just feel that there's a listlessness (is that a word??) until the end. i always remember that a mate said during the original UK broadcast, "god, there's a lot of bonny quines in this town....!" to which i said "well, it IS a soap opera...."

The end of Season Two does meandre somewhat, especially the Civil War gubbins, Leo doing his Igor shtick and the awful shite that was Deputy Andy and his adoptee. And I still don't know what the f*ck that Josie Packard/furniture business was all about. On a whole though, it's great TV. Twin Peaks at it's worst is still better than a lot of TV out there. And Billy Zane nailed it! |
